Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Harley Benner Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this world on December 7, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on December 29, 1940, in Eaton, Ohio, Harley lived a life rich in love, laughter, and dedication to his family and community.

Harley was the cherished son of Harley Benner Sr. and Martha (Thompson) Benner. He graduated from high school in 1957, setting the foundation for a life of learning and growth. Harley dedicated many years of his life as a teacher, a role in which he inspired countless students through his commitment and passion for mentoring others. Later, transitioning to a successful career in sales where he excelled due to his natural ability to connect with people and his relentless work ethic. Harley moved from Grapevine, Texas, to Fort Myers, Florida, in 2000, where he became an active and valued member of his community, embodying the values of kindness and faith.

In 1985, Harley married the love of his life, Patrica Eastman, with whom he shared an extraordinary bond that lasted for 40 beautiful years. Together, they built a loving home filled with warmth and laughter. Harley was not just a husband; he was a devoted father to his son, H. Todd (Kelly) Benner, and his daughter, Marti Teresa Benner. He adored his children and found immense joy in being a grandfather to his five grandchildren: Chelsea Phelps, Danielle Gunter, Natalie Maxwell, Faith Morse, and Trevin Todd Benner. His legacy continues through his seven great-grandchildren.

Harley had a zest for life that was evident in everything he did. He found joy in playing golf, where his patience and focus rewarded him with three remarkable holes-in-one throughout his life. An avid car enthusiast, he had a particular fondness for classic cruisers, which reflected his appreciation for craftsmanship and beauty.

As a man of deep faith, Harley was a good Catholic and lived his life with integrity and purpose. His character was defined by his unwavering love for his family, his strong work ethic, and his generous spirit. He was a mentor not only to his son but to many others who had the privilege of learning from his example. He taught by doing, always leading with kindness and compassion, and he loved deeply by giving of himself.

Harley will be remembered as a faithful and loving husband, a good father, and a cherished friend. His warmth, wisdom, and strength will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He finished his race strong, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Gulf Coast Humane Society, a cause that Harley held dear to his heart.

A private funeral service will be held to honor Harley’s life and his many contributions to those around him.

Harley and Pat were our friends for over 20 years here in the Landings. When we moved into Mariners Cove, we became even better friends. Over the years, we played many rounds of golf with Harley and had lots of laughs. When it came to golf events, Pat and Harley often teamed up with us, and even if we didn't come in with a great score, we had a lot fun. We celebrated many holidays either at their house or at ours and always enjoyed our glasses of wine (once we stopped buying cheap wine, but that is a whole other story about Harley teaching us the value in getting a good bottle of vino), and even as his illness progressed, we were happy when we could get him to laugh at a funny story.

Pat, you and I met when we were living in Mexico and were delighted to learn we were both moving to TX. Fast forward, and I change professions from teaching to publishing, where I keep running into a very nice competitor named Harley Benner. In the true spirit of "It's a small world", my friend Pat attends a publishing event and meets Harley...and we all know the rest of the story!
Harley was a big, loving presence, and I so enjoyed being with you both when you lived in Grapevine. He had an A wife, and I know he's sending you love for your unwavering support during these last tough years.
