Obituary

Helen H. Ahrens, 84, of Edgewater, FL, formerly of Alexandria, VA and New Smyrna Beach, FL, died peacefully at Bert Fish Medical Center on March 30, 2012.  “Grammy”, as she was affectionately referred to, was born in San Antonio, TX, and lived the prototypical Army Air Corps lifestyle moving many times throughout her childhood and teens.  During one of the family’s assignments, at Maxwell Field in Montgomery, AL, she met her husband Willard Ahrens who was stationed there towards the end of WWII.  She and Willard recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Helen moved to Florida about 20 years ago having fallen in love with the area during a vacation.  They originally settled in New Smyrna Beach and more recently lived in the Edgewater Landing community where they had many dear friends, including Pat, Trudy, and Twyla.  While in Edgewater, Grammy was active in both the Red Hat Society and the Edgewater Landing Ladies Club. Because of medical necessity, Helen was twice called upon to be a full time caregiver--once for her father and, until her death, for her husband Willard.  As with everything she did for her family, Grammy selflessly performed these duties with organized perfection! In addition to her husband, Helen is survived by three children, Allyson Frantz (Steven), Leslie Barnes (Jim), and Mark Ahrens (Teresa); nine grandchildren Kristen, Gregory, Colleen, Pam, Lindsay, Erin, Kaitlin, Morgan, and Sean; and ten great-grandchildren. Grammy liked a poem called To Remember Me, by Robert N. Test…a portion of which is quoted below. If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses, and all prejudice against my fellow man. Give my sins to the devil. Give my soul to God. If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I have asked, I will live forever.   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Second Chance Rescue, an animal rescue organization located in Bunnell, Florida.  (http://www.second-chance-rescue.org/Donations.html) Private family services will be held
