Obituary

Hiram Leaston “Buddy” Norris died at Halifax Hospice Edgewater early Thursday morning after a long battle with cancer. Born at Halifax Hospital on February 3, 1948, Buddy was a lifetime resident of southeast Volusia County. He graduated from New Smyrna Beach High School in 1967 and served in the U. S. Army Band, but his true profession was as an artist. Buddy was an award winning artist who shared his faith-inspired pen and ink drawings with those that crossed his path, whether they were a medical professional caring for him or a casual stranger. Buddy was a member of Bella Vista Baptist Church, where he served as Men’s Ministry Director. He loved exhibiting in local art shows, spending time with his grandchildren, and watching cowboy movies.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Laurie Struble Norris, his daughters Ann Russo and Lea Bartos, grand children Andrew and Savannah Weaver, Brendan Russo, Sara, Kraig and Gage Bartos, his father Nudge Norris, his sister Shirley Norris Bennett, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded by his mother, Willine Pellicer Norris, brothers Perry and David Norris, and son Bret Norris.

A celebration of Buddy’s life is planned for Saturday, March 12, 1:00 p.m. at Bella Vista Baptist Church, Edgewater.

Condolences and many prayers to Laurie and the family. Buddy and I go back to Elementary School and there just isn't enough words to tell you how many warm thoughts I had for him. His family and mine were friends in the early years when my Dad and Mom were alive. Buddy was a person you could talk to and share so much with along the years.I always loved his smile. Buddy had so much talent in so many things he did. My heart is so saddened but I know his suffering is gone and he is with our Heavenly Father. His spirit will always be with us. God Bless him as I know he has.

The 'love of my life' was a WONDERFUL grandfather! His grandkids, (or "youngins'", as Buddy so often referred to them) affectionately called him Papa Buddy. I can remember the first time I saw Buddy playing with his grandson, Kraig, he was doing a magic trick with his, then, 2 yr. old grandbaby...pulling a quarter out of Kraig's ear. Buddy would tell Kraig, "Blow on it, go ahead, blow on it!" Kraig would then blow on the quarter, in his Papa Buddy's hand, & that quarter would 'magically'disappear!! The look of amazement, on Kraig's face, was so precious to see....I always enjoyed watching Buddy's interaction with ALL children.....He gave SO MUCH, of himself, to SO MANY!!.......I WILL MISS HIM TERRIBLY!!!

I was shocked to hear from a mutual friend of Buddy's passing. I was married to his brother, Perry Raul Norris. Perry passed away at the age of 24. He left behind a 4 and 1/2 month old son, Christopher J. Norris. I am so sadden by his passing. I am happy to know that the family can now be together. Prayers for you Laurie, and to his girls.

Buddy was a dear friend to me when we were in the Divorce Recovery group at 1st Baptist, New Smyrna Beach. He was a great example, inspiration and encouragement to me during a very troubling time in my life. We pray God's blessings on Laurie and the family members.
