Obituary
Horst Gunter Seydel, MD, FACR, passed away peacefully at home on Easter Sunday April 12, 2020. He was married to Emmy (Emily Louise Meginnity Seydel, MD) for 59 years before her passing. They were devoted to each other in raising a family, traveling, working, and in retirement.
Born in Berlin on August 5, 1929, Horst lived and studied in many countries, earning a medical degree in Germany and coming to the United States as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar. He subsequently completed residency here, entering into the new field of Radiation Oncology, and married the love of his life. His career was devoted to advancing the treatment of cancers and teaching aspiring medical doctors.
In retirement, Horst was an avid painter and sailor. He and Emily were able to travel for many years to follow a life-long interest in opera, classical music and theater.
Horst is survived by his son and daughter in law, Edgar and Sarah, his daughter and son in law, Charlotte and Bob Karls, their children, Emily and Jackson, his daughter and son in law, Carolyn and Habib Sissoko, and their children, Gunter and Alex.
A celebration of Horst’s life will take place 11:00 AM Saturday, July 17 at Baldwin Brothers Heritage Place, 1 North Causeway in New Smyrna Beach. Committal will be at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.
