James A Smelley III

May 31, 1974 – February 15, 2020

 

James (Bo) Smelley III passed away February 15, 2020 in New Smyrna Beach, Fl. surrounded by his family.  He was a well-respected law enforcement officer and later as a professional in the field of Digital Forensics and Cyber Counterintelligence. He spent over 17 years in both military and civilian law enforcement, Air Force OSI (Office of Special Investigations) and as a K-9 police dog handler.  Later he pursued careers in Internet Security and Digital Forensics.  Bo loved a challenge and to learn new things. He had an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, two Master’s Degrees, one in Business Administration and another in Computer Information Systems.  At the time of his death he was working on a third Masters Degree in Network Engineering at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.  Bo was proceeded in death by his parents; James A Smelley, Jr and Mary Hosch ; grandfather, James A Smelley, Sr.; step-mother, Susan Smelley and step-sister, Charity Lee. Left to cherish his memory is his wife , Anna Smelley; daughters, Shayla and Skylar Smelley; grandmother, Nettie Williams; step-brother, David Lee; half-sisters, Candi Wrigley and Crystal Wagoner; uncles, David Smelley, Wayne Faulkner and  Randy Faulkner; aunts, Cille Powers, Opal Fuller, Becky Mabrey, Barbara Faulkner and Cheryl Kirkland. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 23, 2020 from 12:00-1:00pm at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home 1 North Causeway, New Smyrna Beach, Fl.  A Life Celebration Service will follow at 1:00pm. The family has requested that you honor Bo by wearing casual attire to the service. In lieu of flowers, potted plants or Orchids would be appreciated.

    I had the privilege to work with James for a short time when he was doing AF reserve time at Andrews AFB, MD between 2009-2013. The things that stood out about him to me were his humility and dedication to the challenging field of cyber investigations. I am saddened by the news of his passing. Rest in peace brother.

    We will miss Bow Smelley more than words can say a great father a great husband a great friend one hell of a guy and a tough as nails guy he thought to the very end! My husband and I are proud to by know him!! Our hearts go out to Anna and the girls in the whole Smelley family love Cammy and George!
