Obituary

LEESBURG, FL – age 75, Jim passed away peacefully Thursday June 25, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer at home with his family by his side.

He was born in Appleton, WI on December 19, 1944 son of the late Anthony Metz and Isabel Mowry. Jim will be fondly remembered as the owner of Sunburst Jewelers in Racine, WI. Prior to that Jim served his Country honorably in the US Airforce from 1965-1969.

Both he and Lindy loved to travel from Europe to motorcycle rides enjoying many long-distance trips on their Goldwing. Many adventures were had, as they traveled to 40 states and Canada. His love of motorcycling earned him honorary membership in the Blue Knights Wisconsin Chapter XI. Retiring in 2005, he and Lindy moved to South Carolina for 11 years and then made the move to Florida. Wherever they went, new friends were made, but their lasting ties to Racine includes extended family, friends, and the Green Bay Packers. To know Jim meant you were fortunate to be included in his circle of friendship and trust.

Jim is survived by his wife and soulmate Lindy, son Ryan Metz (California), son by choice Jamie Garcia (Florida) sister Toni Hammes (Racine, WI), sister-in law Kathy Metz (Racine, WI) and many loved nieces and nephews. Along with many friends, Jim’s best buddies included Ron Mau, John Steinhoff and Kip Jensen. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother David Metz, sister Linda Erickson, brother-in-laws Cal Hames and Dan Erickson, stepson Daniel Brack, and in-laws Philip and Wanita Brack Jr.

A Celebration of Life in Wisconsin along with a Military Remembrance in Leesburg FL will be held at a later date.

I cannot picture Jim without Lindy because they made a great couple. If I wasn't buying something at Sunburst Jewelers I stopped to say hello and we had great conversations. I learned a great deal about gems and jewelry from the both of them and I passed my love and knowledge on to my twin daughters. Being self employed myself we often shared stories of the unknown problems of owning a business and the joys. I had to drive to my business right past Sunburst every morning and more often than not my car just pulled into their parking lot! We shared many good times with Jim and Lindy thru out the years. It was a joy to know Jim. Keeping Lindy in prayer in her new life without Jim.

We became friends with Lindy and Jim about 30 years ago and have such good memories of so many fun times spent together. He was such an easy guy to like. He had the patience of a saint and a good sense of humor. In the later years, he was such a fighter...never dwelling on his illness, rather enjoying the moments he was fortunate to capture. We are so glad he touched our lives and will miss him dearly, but he will live on in our memories. Our sincere condolences to Lindy, Ryan, Jamie and the entire family on their loss. Hugs and God Bless.

I was a customer at Sunburst for many years. Jim always was so understanding of my limited budget. He was so helpful in my obtaining a diamond after 25 years of marriage. Now nearing almost 50 years , I wear this ring with affection. He was so friendly, and he always shared a skiing story or a trip on the cycles. I missed him , when he closed the store. He was a special person, and I felt I was more than a customer but a friend.

To Lindy and Families, My condolences for you're loss. I grew up knowing the entire Metz family, as my Dad worked with Tony at Dumore, and the Dumore picnic was alway's attended by the Metz family, This went on for many, many years. My Dad, and Tony were good friends, and we even visited the Metz family at they're home. I have a Twin Sister, as Jim had a Twin Sister and Brother. Jim was 5 years older than us so we didn't see him as often, but I do remember him. The entire family were wonderful people. My Granddaughter Is called IZZY, just like Jim's Mom. I also remember you Lindy, from the Taylor/21st ST. area, as we the Nelson's lived on Grange Ave. Again, I am so sorry for you're loss, you must have a ton of great memories.

I got to know Jim when I worked at Johnson Wax. I often patronized his Jewelry store, he was always friendly and helpful. I still wear the gold necklace and bracelet he made for me. He will be missed. He was a great guy. We had a lot of laughs together.
    RIP good buddy.

We remember Jim with great fondness! Jim taught Dean how to wire a house back in the ‘70’s. We have never needed to hire an electrician! We had a prickly pear cactus in our home that became too dangerous to keep. Jim put it in the front window of Sunburst Jewelers! Perhaps it protected the business!
We have good memories of skiing together with the Snomads Ski Club.
Jim was always kind, thoughtful, helpful, and lots of fun.
