Obituary
James Roland Montgomery III of Ponce Inlet, FL, and formerly of Great Falls, VA, peacefully passed away on February 16, 2017. He graduated from Florida State University in 1954 with a B.S. in Mathematics, followed by serving his country in the U.S. Army. James served as Commissioner of Insurance with the District of Columbia Insurance Department at the pinnacle of his career spanning 28 years with the Department. A member of the American Academy of Actuaries, James won many awards during his government service and ultimately retired in 1988, forming the consulting firm, Washington Insurance Regulatory Consultants and serving on the Board of Directors of 5 Star Life Insurance Company
He was known for his kind and sensible nature as well as his varied interests and adventurous endeavors such as sky diving, boxing, motorcycling, recreational aviation, orating, and running, including completing the JFK 50 mile race and two Marine Corps Marathons.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Joan F. Montgomery, his sister Joyce Cervantes of Alford, FL, and his five children: James R. Montgomery IV of Charlottesville, VA, Joseph K. L. Montgomery of Surin, Thailand, John E. Montgomery of Great Falls, VA, Jason B. Montgomery of Falls Church, VA and Jennifer E. Greenway of Ashburn, VA. He was the beloved grandfather to six grandchildren: Joshua Montgomery, Jack Montgomery, Jessica Montgomery, Elaina Greenway, Kathryn Montgomery and James Greenway and a great grandson, Miles Montgomery.
James will be laid to rest following a family service at Andrew Chapel Cemetery, with a memorial service planned for April in Florida. In lieu of flowers, please support Operation Homefront at www.operationhomefront.net.
