Obituary

James (Jim) Michael Scanlan, age 74 originally from Delaware County, PA, passed away on December 4, 2023, after a two year courageous battle with melanoma.

Jim is survived by his wife, Tammy (Nedell) Scanlan, his beautiful children, James (Nicole) Scanlan, Mark Scanlan, Michael (Kelli) Scanlan, Ryan (Jessica) Johnstone, Kyle Johnstone, and Carly Scanlan. His wonderful grandchildren, Shane, Adam, Shawn, Collin, Madeline, Michael, Jack, Emily, and Caitlin. His sisters, Jeanna (Dan) Penot and Denise (Tom) D’Annunzio and many, many, beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (Loomas) Scanlan, his sister Maryellen (Bill) Patterson, his brother John (Monica) Scanlan, and sister Karen (Rick) Tisa.

Jim’s proudest achievement and overwhelming source of joy was his family. Any mention of his children or grandchildren would spark a lengthy conversation about their achievements or amusing antics. He was truly a proud Dad and Pop Pop. Jim believed that his time in the Army helped form the man he became, and in his final years he would sit with his buddy Jack on Sunday mornings and reminisce about their experiences for hours. Jim had many successful careers throughout his life, but his heartfelt passion was teaching. Jim’s love of teaching touched so many college students and inspired Jim to earn his Doctorate from the University of Maryland at the age of 68.

A funeral mass will be held at St Issac Jogues, Marlton, NJ, on April 11, 2024 at 11am. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers a donation to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL or Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia would be appreciated.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone at Moffitt for their warm embrace of care and expertise to support us through our toughest fight. A special thank you to Jim’s doctors, nurses and trial coordinator for your love, patience, laughs and caring. We couldn’t have walked this journey without you. Lastly, Hope Hospice of Ft Myers, you were wonderful.

Jim’s spirit of kindness and joy was such a gift to those who knew him. From being Santa at RDC, to offering a hand when needed, you could count on Jim. We always enjoyed spending time with him and getting into great, thought- provoking conversations. Above all else, Jim’s absolute devotion to his family is what we think of when we think of Jim.
