James C. Wood was born on October 1, 1923, in Cameron, Missouri, to Florina Crall Wood and Clarence Wood. He died peacefully on August 24, 2021, at the age of 97.
James attended the University of Illinois earning his engineering undergraduate degree and then his Juris Doctorate degree. During the summer of 1942, James had a diving accident where he broke his neck and was in a chest cast for months. This prevented him from joining the military during World War II, when he was designated as 4F. Despite this setback, his determination and drive pushed him to complete his degrees and go on to become a valued member of a patent law firm in downtown Chicago.
James married Mary Roselyn Bennett in 1946. They had 4 children, Jody, Betty, Jim, and Mary Jo. They lived together in Deerfield, Illinois, which gave Jim a quick train ride into Chicago every day. He relished being a trial lawyer, and after his retirement, his dedication to his job was recognized by the law firm, where only his name and R. Phillips’ name were the only two names that stayed on the firm’s letterhead for decades.
During his working years, James served on the local school board for 6 years, was an officer and then President of the Illinois Bar Association and served as President of his golf club in Deerfield. After his retirement, he continued to serve on the board, and as President of the Oceanside Country Club and Indigo Lakes Homeowners Association.
Golf was James’ passion in life, and overall, he earned 6 holes in one and shot his age 89 times. He and Mary retired to Daytona Beach and enjoyed many activities together at the Oceanside Country Club. They also took many golf trips to Hawaii, and throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States.
James is survived by his 4 children, Jody Settlemyre of Ormond Beach, FL, Betty Wood of Milo, Oregon, Jim Wood and his wife Alina of Reno, Nevada, and Mary Jo Sheppard of Rochester, Washington. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Lyn Settlemyre of Katonah, New York, Kim Williams and her husband Geran and their sons, Logan and Ashton of Park City, Utah, Tammi Steward and her husband Dallas and their daughters, Ryte and Toryn of Rochester, Washington, Bennett Sheppard and his wife Karen and their children, Braydon and Emily of Pensacola, Florida, and Chip Wood and his wife Tess of Portland, Oregon. James was predeceased by his wife, Mary Wood, and 2 grandsons, Jadrion Katz and Gaelan Katz.
James is very dearly loved by his family and friends, and his memory and love will be kept in our hearts forever.
