Obituary
Joan (Jerry) Hunt Tyrrell
Joan Tyrrell (Jerry to her friends) passed away August 15, 2024. Jerry was born Joan Marion Hunt on June 22, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Cliff and Marion (nee Westhus) Hunt. When she was little her family moved to Rochester, NY, where she graduated from Brighton High School in 1950. A 1954 graduate of Skidmore College, Jerry moved to New York City, where she met her future husband George F. (Pete to HIS friends) Tyrrell. They married in 1956 and settled in Middletown, NJ.
Raising three children, Jerry was also an active golfer and bridge player. She and Pete were members of Navesink Country Club in Middletown for many years. After Pete’s retirement in 1994, they relocated to Sugar Mill in New Smyrna Beach. Jerry loved to laugh and always enjoyed making new friends in the community, whether at Sugar Mill or Advent Hospital and the Little Theater in New Smyrna, both places where she greatly enjoyed volunteering. Jerry loved engaging with people, going out of her way to make friends although, even among her closest friends, the one thing she would not share was her secret gingerbread man recipe. Jerry was a communicant of Star of the Sea church in New Smyrna Beach.
Pre-deceased by Pete in 2011, Jerry is survived by her three children, son-in-law and daughter-in-law and five grandchildren. In lieu of services or flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warriors or other veterans charities, which Jerry and Pete were longtime supporters of.
