One of my earliest life memories is the day I met Joe Chapman. Maybe I was three, if it is possible to remember that early. I toddled down the alley behind our new house, and there was this boy named Joe. When my mother discovered I was missing, she scoured the neighborhood in a panic. I believe I recall this incident because it was my first spanking all the way from Joe’s house to mine. Little did I know that the spanking was worth it, for I had just met a friend that I would enjoy and appreciate for years to come.

I thought his name was Joe Ellen Chapman. My mother corrected me, Allen not Ellen.

We became classmates, and for the next 12 years Joe added a spark to our class that was undeniable. He was one of the oldest classmates, the first to hit the big 16. We were excited when he announced he was taking the driver’s test. “Oh Joe, will you drive us to the ????.” The big day finally arrived. We couldn’t wait until Joe returned from the Washington CH, test location. He announced that the test had gone well until he went through the intersection without stopping. “Bummer.” We would have to wait for our ride. To this day, when I come to the four way stop, I think of Joe. His grand sense of humor combined with some other amazing classmates created incredibly wonderful school day memories that I shall cherish always.

I send my heartfelt thoughts to you, Ruby, Larry and Family. I’m so sad.

To Joe's family. I am so sorry to hear about my friend and classmate leaving this world. Joe and I had many laughs and good times while we were in school together, back in Greenfield, Ohio. I am sure he will be sorely missed.
My God bless all of you.
    John

We just celebrated our 30th anniversary in the very fine house that Joe and Steve Crist built for us. Joe was an absolute pleasure to work with throughout the year of construction; he was always very pleasant and easy to work with. He said at the beginning that his goal was for us to still be friends when the project was finished--- and we certainly were. Joe was an important person in our lives and just a great all-around guy. We mourn his passing and will be thinking of you and your family, Ruby.

Joe was always a huge presence here at Sea Gate. We have all missed him since his moving to Florida, but every once in a while he would show up. Now, he will really be missed by all of us permanently. He will be fondly remembered for everything he did and for just being Joe. God bless!

Dear Ruby...I have thought of you and Joe fondly and often. My time at Crist-Chapman was absolutely wonderful and I often tell folks it was the best job I ever had. Working with Joe was more fun than work. Leaving Crist-Chapman was the most difficult part of moving away from NC. Joe's integrity, his sense of humor, his work ethic and his immense love for you, his beautiful wife will stay with me all of my days. I will always remember him taking time to serve our community in "Take A Kid Fishing" and seeing the smiles on the little children's faces as they caught their first fish. Joe caught a 7 lb bass that day himself! What wonderful memories. Joe was one in a million and I consider it gain to have known and worked with him. God bless and keep you.
