From his high school days, when I first met him, to the challenges of adulthood, Johnny always showed unwavering kindness and genuine compassion. He wasn’t just a friend, he was the embodiment of selflessness, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a joke to lift our spirits. Johnny’s humor was infectious!

But beyond the laughter and the jokes, Johnny’s sensitivity and generosity touched everyone around him. He listened with empathy, offering kind words in times of sorrow and uncertainty.

I will always remember Johnny with a smile and will celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. His spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched, the smiles he sparked, and the kindness he shared.

    Rest in peace, dear friend.

I met John when, as five-year olds, we started first grade at St. Francis of Assisi grammar school in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Although we attended school together only for first and part of second grade, when my family moved away from Germantown, that was the start of a life-long friendship. John was smart, kind, generous, strong (in his opinions also), hard-working, loyal and a man of faith. He also knew how to tell a good story. We shared many adventures together, beginning with playing in his beloved sandbox (mostly using our imaginations), continuing during weeks-long summer visits, innumerable picnics with our families, and through travel to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, to Bermuda during a hurricane, and visits with John and Joanne in Florida or with me in Washington. I will miss John’s friendship and support, and the ability to pick up the phone and share our lives and hear a good story. I am comforted by many memories of the good and the difficult times we shared and by the certainty that John is in a better place.
