John Albert Duckworth, age 87, long time resident of New Smyrna Beach, FL, died October 11, 2016, after a five-year battle against cancer. John was born in 1929, in Pensacola, Florida, the son of Navy father, Herbert Spencer Duckworth from Iowa and mom Eloise Kilby Duckworth from Virginia, and he
was the younger brother of Kilby Duckworth, his sister (now deceased). He moved with his family to California at only a few months of age. There, he later enjoyed a carefree life on wonderful Coronado Island, California, where his father was stationed at the Naval Air Base. He swam and surfed and was a “planespotter” with many other young boys there. He returned to Jacksonville in his teens, attending and graduating from Bowles Military Academy, lettering on both the swim and football
teams, and sailing his small boat on the St. John’s River. He later graduated from the University of Missouri and remained a staunch “Mizzou” fan throughout his life. John served in the U.S. Navy (1952—1954) during the Korean War aboard on the aircraft carrier, USS Randolph. His later career took him to Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri, where he worked as a sales representative for Armco
Steel, traveling a large territory in those states. Playing golf was a passion in those early days, and he enjoyed participating in both club and Pro-Am tournaments. One of the most important a accomplishments in John Duckworth’s life was to be in “grateful recovery” for more than forty years through Alcoholics Anonymous, and he remained supportive of and active in that organization the rest
of his life. John was an accomplished artist and sketched and painted many portraits of people he knew, as well as those who “just seemed interesting to him.” He was a naturelover and enjoyed horseback riding, kayaking and playing tennis. John was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in New Smyrna Beach, where he spent many hours in both formal worship and solitary prayer. John
Albert Duckworth is survived by his wife, Lola West Duckworth of New Smyrna Beach and Winter Park, Florida, two children, Mary Lynn Mimouna of Morocco, and William Cowell Duckworth of Colorado, a granddaughter, Wardalynn Mimouna of Morocco, and Lola Duckworth’s son, Scott West of Lakeland, Florida. John Duckworth will be greatly missed by his family, his dog, Scout, and
many friends and acquaintances who have known him over the years. Special thanks to
the nurses of Halifax Hospice of Volusia County and to the private sitters who looked after John during the past few months. Their care was essential for John’s comfort and the family’s needs. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Halifax Hospice of Volusia County. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, October 29th, 2:00 pm, at St. Peter the Fisherman Episcopal Church, 4220 Saxon Avenue (beachside), New Smyrna Beach. Family, friends, and acquaintances are welcome to attend this service.
