John C. Costa, age 76, passed away on November 3, 2024, in Longwood, FL.
John is survived by his wife, Barbara (Mallett); sons, John E (Gina) of Oviedo FL; Gary (Nicole) of Marshall MI; Jerry (Liz) of Lake Mary FL; his 5 grandchildren, Alex, Anthony, Haley, Evan, and Casey; his brother Ron Duda (Teresa) of Wyandotte, MI; sister Denise Efaw (David) of Westland MI; niece Jennfier Duda; nephews Derek Nowakowski, and Corey Duda. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lottie Duda, of Wyandotte MI.
John was born in Detroit and was an avid fan of the University of Michigan and Detroit sports teams. He was a proud Marine who served his country in Vietnam, where he was awarded a Purple Heart, before becoming a training officer at Quantico. In 1969, he married Barbara, and they lived in Michigan until 1990, when they made Florida their home.
He was an active man who accomplished his goal of living his best life with his wife of 55 years by his side until God called him home. John’s Catholic faith became profoundly important to him, and during the nine-month Ignatian retreat, he was well known for saying “It’s all good”. He cherished his family and friends, who will always remember his love for beachside getaways, memorable adventures, and savoring a good Kentucky bourbon. His passion for life and the joy he found in simple pleasures will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A funeral mass is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Monday, November 25th, at Nativity Catholic Church in Longwood, FL, followed by interment of Ashes with honors at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims, FL 10:30 AM on Tuesday, November 26th. Father Bob Markunas will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Wounded Warrior Project®, the National Foundation for Cancer Research, or a charity of your choice.
