I read his book An Introduction to Contemporary Preaching, and had a delightful lunch with Pastor Baumann to "pick his brain" when I was very young. -- a few decades ago. I lived in Long Beach at the time.

He was so pleasant and so helpful. I am on longer in ministry, but use what he taught me in my speaking.

I told someone today at lunch what I learned from him. So, I was glad to find this notice, and sorry to know that he is gone.

As we moved this week I came across his retirement at NLPC in April 2018. His life greatly affected mine in a very short time. My parents became members of his church immediately upon their move from WA state. My Dad , knowing his time was short in this life developed a close relationship where I was privileged to be included. Dan’s special needs daughter and I had the same name, Lynette. She gave Dad communion once when visiting. Dan did my Dad’s memorial service after such a short time of knowing him. The FL memorial was so special as he hit every character quality of Dad’s responsibility in leadership and having to deal with boards and egos in trying to create a greater good. He drew us into the tribute and I surprised myself with my public speaking and recitation of Dad’s words to me as an 8 year old “ Sit firm in the saddle and you’ll be OK” ( riding together as we approached a dust devil) . 4 years after this my Husband experienced a catastrophic explosion at Motel 6 Bremerton WA Aug 18 , 2015 and these words held me steady. Today I looked up his death date and found it to be Feb 5th which happens to be our Son’s birthday. Our Son has been imprisoned for 25 years and Dan was an INCREDIBLE encouragement to our family. Short time knowing him but FOREVER impacted.

Pastor Dan was my pastor at WABF during my college years. He was the most gracious pastor I had ever met and took time every month to sit and talk to me about ministry, preaching, and church life. He was a transparent pastor. I can remember the times he preached two sermons each Sunday at the Methodist Church (with Arnell Motz helping in one service) which continued to grow the church and then the joyous day of buying the property for Whittier Area Baptist Fellowship. When my wife and I were married (while still living in the area) Pastor Dan became our pastor and was always a kind man, solid preacher, and strong leader int he church. He gave me a complimentary copy of his book on Contemporary Preaching which I still own and use when I teach homiletics in Africa, Europe and Asia! He was a model to me and it was disappointing to see him one day leave WABF (we had moved to Colorado when that happened) but I got to catch up with him annually at the BGC Annual Meetings across the nation and to hear of the roles he had at College Ave Church and then with the BGC leadership team during the days of re-organizing.

Probably because my 50th reunion is coming up at Bethel University, I started thinking of former people I knew then. I went looking for Dan Baumann and found the recording of his memorial service. I had Dan as a communication professor at Bethel Seminary in the Fall of 1971, before he left for Whittier. My fondest memory of him was on one very cold winter’s day my car wouldn’t start and I was panicking a bit; I ran into Dan in the school lounge and he could tell that something was amiss. I told him; he dropped what he was doing and drove me to work. A true moment of grace for me.
