Obituary
John Edward Jackson, 98 years old, of Cape Coral, FL and formerly of Pedricktown/ Pennsville, NJ, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2023, with family by his side. John was born January 2, 1925, in New York City to Martin Jackson and Edith Nielson.
He was a 1942 graduate of Samuel Gompers Industrial High School in New York. John was a WWII Navy Veteran serving from 1943 – 1946 aboard the USS Phoenix. During his Naval tenure, he traveled to the South Pacific, Guam, The Philippines and New Guinea. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon / 2 Stars and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon / 6 Stars. After he retired from the Navy, John worked on the NY subway system as a train operator, and later for A&P markets in Penns Grove, NJ, in the frozen food department. In his “post-retirement” life, John drove a school bus until he was 83 years old for Walt’s Bus Service in Pedricktown, NJ.
John was predeceased by the love of his life, Conchetta (Connie) DeFeo, whom he met in 1944. They were married for 67 years, and raised their family in Pedricktown, NJ where they lived until Connie’s death in 2013. John built his family’s home by hand with the help of family and friends.
John is survived by his sons, John (Christine) of Cape Coral, FL (formerly of Pennsville, NJ) and Robert (Susan) of Pennsville, NJ. In addition, he is survived by six grandchildren: John Jackson (Angela), Jennifer (Rich) D’Alessandro, Beth (Gene) Montagna, Katie (Jon) Scull, Vincent (Amber) Jackson, and Jeffrey Cooksey. He is survived by great-granddaughters, Savannah (Bradley) Duffield, Laurel D’Alessandro and Delaney Monterosso and great-grandson, Ashton Riggs, his sister-in-law, Pat, and a host of nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his son, Anthony, and four brothers, Buddy, Owen, Donald and Norry.
Anyone who knew John knew he was a force to be reckoned with. John grew up during the Great Depression. He had a memory as good as an elephant’s and a story for every occasion. He was a pleasant, happy person and it was a delight spending time in his company. John reconnected with his beloved cousin, Catherine Marks, and spent hours talking to her on the phone reminiscing about their childhood. He loved watching Barney Miller, Perry Mason and Two and a Half Men. His laugh was infectious. John’s other passion was playing poker with his friends at “The Gallery” where he lived in Cape Coral. The family would like to thank the nursing and aide staff at The Gallery for the care and compassion shown towards John. We would also like to thank John’s nephew, Donald Jackson, who always made time to talk and visit with his Uncle John.
John’s Catholic faith was very important to him. He was a devoted parishioner of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Cape Coral, FL and St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in Penns Grove, NJ.
Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 1922 SW 20th Ave, Cape Coral, FL 33991 or St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, 369 Georgetown Road, Carney’s Point, NJ 08069.
