Obituary

John was raised in Dorchester, Mass., where he attended St. Gregory grammar school and Cathedral High School, graduating in 1957. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and proudly served as a Hospital Corpsman Operating Room Technician. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to civilian life and later completed his college education graduating from New Hampshire Vocational Technical College, at both the Manchester and Stratham, N.H. campus earning an A.S. in Science Registered Nurse degree.   John will be remembered as a kind and gentle man and always wanted to help others. He had the ability to master every new technology that he encountered and enjoyed inventing things to solve everyday problems.John retired from a long and diverse career in nursing, and the real successes of his work were the many men and women whose lives he touched in his nursing career. He will always be remembered for his kind and gentle words when people needed to hear them the most. During his lifetime he held many callings, and he followed many different paths in many different occupations; but the one that provided him with the most personal satisfaction was that of registered nurse.   John held a license as a Commercial Pilot, with single and multi-engine instrument ratings. He also participated as a member of the ARRL (American Radio Relay League), and the DBARA (Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association, Inc.) as AK4NX. He especially enjoyed his Harley Davidson motorcycles and was a member of C.O.B.B. a motorcycle social group, and a Life Member of the Harley Owners Group, and Abate of Florida, Inc.   John is survived by his beloved wife and best friend Shirley L. (Anderson) McLaughlin, mother Constance M. Holmes of Exeter, N.H. Other family members include first cousin Thomas C. Clancy of Milton, MA. First cousins once removed Deirdre (Clancy) Hammel of Braintree, MA, Sean P. Clancy of Plymouth,MA, and Thomas E. Clancy Jr. of Dorchester, MA, and second cousins Aiden and Tommy Hammel of Braintree, MA, and Meghan Clancy, and Colin Clancy of Plymouth, MA. He was the last living member of the John E. McLaughlin family, having been predeceased by his father John Edward McLaughlin Sr. who died on September 15, 2002.   The family wishes to thank Indigo Manor, Dr. John F. Cullen , Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler for their care and consideration during this difficult time.   Memorial donations may be made in his honor to Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler 1688 W. My sincere sympathy, I just discovered this on line, I only knew John (my cousin) from Ancestry and he was wonderful to write back and forth with...his mother Connie was my mother Mary's first cousin.
