Obituary

John A. Francis of Punta Gorda, Florida passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at the age of 86 years old. After a long battle with leukemia, he died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife and son. John was born on December 6, 1936 in Leicester, England to Archibald and Nora Francis. He spent his early years in England where his love of music began. England is also where he met his wife Margaret “Peg” of 66 years. They were married on September 1, 1956 and soon after started a family. John completed an apprenticeship as an electrician and held several degrees, including a bachelor’s of science in psychology and a bachelor’s of art. John and Peg immigrated to Canada and would later settle in Port Kent, NY. He was well known for his work with the YMCA and as a skilled electrician. He enjoyed many hobbies including archery, shooting, swimming and learning many different languages. He also obtained a pilot’s license and enjoyed flying small planes. His biggest passion, however, was always music. He could often be found at local parks playing in jam sessions with friends. He was skilled at several instruments including guitar, mandolin and the fiddle but was best known for his banjo playing. John is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Donna Bradford, his granddaughter Jennifer Francis-Chauvin and his nephew Alan Francis. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Francis, his son Paul Francis of Plattsburgh, NY, his brother Robert (Barbara) Francis of Ontario, Canada, his sister Dorothy Gough of England, his granddaughters Nicki (Crea) Courson of Clemmons, NC, Cathleen Francis-Harnden of Morrisonville, NY, Amanda Francis-Joy of Peru, NY, and Melissa (Dylan) Parmenter of King Ferry, NY. He is also survived by his nine great grandchildren: Jadyn, Caleb, Gavin, Kali, Nathan, Bently, Riley, Gracie, and Kanon. Anyone who knew John knew that he had a great sense of humor. His laugh was contagious and he could make everyone smile. He will be missed dearly by his many friends and family. To honor John’s wishes there will be no funeral service. He will be cremated and the family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date.
