Obituary

John “Jack” Hendrick, 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday December 17, 2024 surrounded by his family at his home in Port Charlotte, FL.

Son of Geraldine Cowdrey and John Norbert Hendrick, he was born on January 23, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan.

Jack married Nancy Tilton on July 17, 1981. They were married for 43 wonderful years and had two children Tiffany Lynn “Dorman” and John Douglas Hendrick.

Majority of Jack’s life was on the water as a ship’s Captain.  He was a tugboat Captain when he got out of the Navy on Lake Heron, Lake Erie, and Lake St. Clair, Michigan. He then transitioned to being a yacht captain with a Merchant Ocean Master Officer license. He received an accommodation from the United States Coast Guard in 1982 in Fort Lauderdale, Fl.

Honorable discharge, U.S. Navy, Aviation flight engineer 1955-1959 holds U.S. Coast Guard license salt and fresh water obtained this license in 1959 and kept valid through his career.

Jack’s interest were flying as a pilot, motion picture equipment and films, fishing, water sports, ham radio, old radios, and even had a radio repair shop in his garage.  He was an avid film collector of 16mm and 35mm film.  He was a vintage film/movie collector which were his treasures that made him most happy.  For his enjoyment of said items he had four businesses for his love of film J&N Productions, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Plantation Theater, Plantation, Florida, Associated Film & Video Production in Mulberry, FL, and his last stop was Electron Valley in Lakeland, Fl.

Jack’s life touched many people with that many many fun stories.  A small snip it of one as mentioned above with his love of life on the water, he truly loved going across the ocean at night to watch the plankton sparkle and light up the ocean water as the waves caressed the boat. With that said, he had many trips across the gulf to Caribbean Islands.  His wife Nancy, on one of those journeys going across the ocean, there was rough swells that listed the 70’ yacht needless to say Nancy thought she was going to go through the window of the yacht. They turned the yacht back around to Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale, Fl, where Nancy was balancing on the boat rail to tie up the boat she fell into the water between the yacht and the dock.  Jack in an adrenaline rush put the boat in neutral and flew from the prop deck put his arm down into the water pulling Nancy out of the water before she was smashed. She knew then he would be her life partner.

Jack escaped death many times as an infant with childhood diseases.  While in the Navy he survived two plane crashes.  When he got back from the service he bought a car.  While traveling down the road Jack saw a drunk driver and tried to maneuver from away from the vehicle and the nearby river in Michigan, the drunk driver’s vehicle made contact with Jack’s car splitting the car in half then throwing Jack and his seat from the car, when Jack landed on the ground his seat made contact with him as well.   He was pronounced dead at the scene, he was loaded up into the ambulance with a white sheet covering him and within transporting he sat up and freaked out the paramedics.

To say the least Jack was the ultimate Turbo Man!

Jack is survived by his loving wife Nancy, his son John, his daughter Tiffany, his son-in-law Christopher, three grandchildren Brantlee, Briella, and Kinsley, his sister Janice, many nieces, nephews, and great nieces as well as great nephews.  In addition to his family, he was proceeded by his mother Geraldine Cowdrey, father John Norbert Hendrick, Jim Norbert Hendrick, Judy Ann Hendrick, Joseph Leo Hendrick, as well as many other family members, and friends.

Services will be held at: Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society, on Sunday, December 22, 2024 at 11am-1pm with a gathering after.
