Obituary

John (Johnny) Hemmi was born March 4th, 1946, in Chicago, IL, the only child of John and Dorothy Hemmi. He passed away on December 6th, 2023 in Ocala, FL. Johnny was only 77 years old.

Johnny is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sandy Hemmi; his children John (Denise) and Dawn (Anthony) Licata; his grandchildren, Cassie, Jessica, Angela, Andrew, Abigael, Jeff, and Evan; his great-grandchildren Adriana and Beckett; his faithful animals Josie, Jake, and Sonny; and many good friends.

Johnny always enjoyed an outdoor lifestyle. Whether riding motorcycles, ATV’s, boating, fishing, camping, or hunting. He was always looking for adventure: trekking across country in a tiny motor home with 2 kids and 2 dogs, getting lost on the back roads of Louisiana, or buying shrimp on the beach out of the back of a pick-up truck from some random guy… so many adventures. Johnny and Sandy were able to retire young and continue their adventures for many years in their motor home, with their animals in tow and sometimes the grandchildren too.

Johnny was a hard worker; working whatever hours were needed for Sandy to stay home with their children. Once the grandkids arrived he said, “I may not have been around enough for the kids, but I will make that up with the grandkids.” He made sure he made many memories with all his grandkids. His weird sense of humor, commanding presence, and love for his family will be greatly missed. Johnny, Dad, Pop-Pop, Grandpa: we love you and know you will always will be watching over us…mostly telling us to slow down and stop following that car too close.

We met John and Sandy at Wilderness Resort, Ocala. We had many things in common : RVing, going out to breakfast or lunch, and playing Hand and Foot. He was a loyal friend and a gentle and loving husband to Sandy. We will miss him.

Nora and I will both miss John. I particularly will miss him walking by with the dogs and always having a nice chat and I could always get a good laugh out of John. I often shared information on the projects that I was working on and sometimes dragged him into the garage to show him. We extend our sincerest sympathy to Sandy and all of John's family and his other friends, we will all miss him I'm sure.
