Obituary
John Moore McDowell, II of Daytona Beach, FL died of complications following surgery at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center on June 8, 2018.
Born on December 29, 1928 in Winding Gulf, WV, Mr. McDowell graduated high school in Big Stick, WV at the age of 17. He joined the Navy after high school as shore patrol and was approved for Navy pilot training. Finishing his tour of duty John graduated from Concord College in 3 years.
During the following years John served as comptroller of the Uptowner Inn in Huntington, WV. He met and married the love of his life, Lucille (Lee) Kyle of Barboursville, WV, adopting as his own her 3 children. Thereafter Lee gave birth to their son, John (Jay) Moore McDowell III. Moving to Lakeland,, FL, where he managed a children’s clothing factory. John finished his work life by managing Maidenform factories in Huntington, WV and Princeton, WV until their closing due to outsourcing. Upon retirement John and Lee moved to Florida where they bought and renovated houses in St. Petersburg, Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach. He and Lee adorned many homes with their handiwork.
John’s last words before surgery were, “Take care of my dog, Banjo.” He was surrounded by his wife and children when he died.
Preceded in death by his father, John Moore McDowell I and mother, Emma Jane McDowell, and sister Shirley McDowell, Mr. McDowell is survived by his wife, Lee McDowell, son Michael Kyle (wife Jenny), daughter Pamela Kyle Greene (husband Chris), daughter Leigh Kristel (Kris) McDowell, son John Moore (Jay) McDowell III (wife Lori), sister Patty Sturgill and her children; grandchildren Becky Kyle Aviles, David Kyle, Meggie Greene Shakra, Felicity Greene, John Greene, Jada McDowell, Macy McDowell, Emerson McDowell; great grandchildren Mikayla Aviles, Angel Aviles Jr., Tripp Nicholas Shakra; sister-in-law Kathy Vidricksen and brother-in-law Robert Vidricksen and children.
A memorial celebration of Mr. McDowell’s life will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Ormond Beach, FL on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered to Faith Lutheran Church, 2010 Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach, FL 32174.
