Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Kenneth “Jack” Murray, age 86, on December 6, 2023. Jack was born on April 19, 1937, in the Bronx. He attended St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, NJ, and went on to Manhattan College and graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Jack was a beloved husband, cherished father, doting grandfather, and loyal friend.

As an entrepreneur Jack could not have asked for a better partner than his wife of 62 years Diane, with whom he took risks and shared life’s joys. Together Jack and Diane raised two wonderful children, a son John resides in Sun Valley, ID and a daughter Karen Culkin (Peter) reside in Naples, FL. Jack is also survived by his adored grandchildren George Murray and Attie Murray, his siblings, nieces and nephews.

Jack lived his life on his own terms. He spent much of his career with IBM. Then, upon the launch of the IBM personal computer (PC) in 1981, Jack had the vision to leave IBM and start his own company. He formed a start-up called Information Product Centers (IPC).Jack built IPC for fifteen years, and in 1998 successfully exited the business with the sale to a publicly traded company.

Jack supported several good causes. He served Hackensack University Medical Center in NJ as a member of the Board of Trustees for many years. As an avid golfer, Jack took pride in serving two-terms as President of Arcola Country Club in Paramus, NJ. He was a long-time member of The Hole-In-The-Wall Golf Club in Naples, FL.

Jack took care of his friends and was the rock of his family. His warmth, wisdom, and quick wit touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and resilience that will be carried on by those who knew him.

How lucky I was to have known Jack. He was such a lovely fun, charismatic person with always a smile on his face. He supported me when I lost my husband and I will be forever grateful. He and Diane were a wonderful special couple. He certainly will be missed by so many people including myself.

My big brother was my best friend, my teacher, my confidant and my protector. We had an ideallic childhood growing up in Northern New Jersey. There must have been a dozen kids living in our neighborhood and Jack was looked up to from all of them. In those days parents sent their kids out to play and they were told not to come home until dinner. Jack always founds ways to fill our time outdoors. Games, hide and seek, ice skating in Winter, swimming in Summer. Also the occasional prank on the new guy on the block. As we got older and our lives took us to opposite sides of the country, my big brother continued to be the one I turned to when I needed advice or just as a sounding board. He never let me down.
    I will miss him terribly.

There is so much to say about my big brother. From childhood on he was my trusted advisor, my loyal guardian, my partner in crime (lots of stories there!) and my friend. If there was a decision to be made in the family, it was always "ask Jack". We had an ideal childhood growing up in a small town in New Jersey. We had the freedom to ride our bikes all around, which gave us ample opportunity for mischief. Jacks infectious smile got us out of a lot. It is impossible to capture a lifetime of love, caring, and kindness in one short paragraph but my big brother was all of that and more. I will miss him terribly.

Uncle Jack was a force to be reckoned with, a laugh that was contagious and wit like no other… his love was fierce for his family and friends and his patience a virtue. He always made me smile and his stories a pleasure to listen to… love you uncle Jack, you will be missed but forever in my heart ♥️

Jack was a devoted family man, a terrific person to be with and a privilege for many of us to be his friend. When with the golf group he made the conversations interesting, more enjoyable and made everyone feel better with his presence. We will deeply miss him.

Mr. Murray was so wonderful and I am blessed to have known him. He left an indelible impression on me as I was growing up with Karen. An impression that was rich with love, humour, friendship, great advice, and lots of patience. Patience tested weekly during our teenage years that must have added a few grey hairs to that lovely head! Always dealt with our mishaps with humour - such as the missing Whopper in a Burger King incident :) So glad I just saw him and the beautiful Mrs. M in Naples - a wonderful time for us all to be together. He is, and will always be, very loved.

Very sad to hear Jack had passed. Such a gentleman who gave his friendship and required nothing in return. So happy when he reached out to me and I enjoyed every time we got together for golf. Think of him and smile. Steve &Marianne Haggerty
