Obituary

John W. Cory, Jr., born on January 16, 1960, in Daytona Beach, FL, to John (Jack) W. Cory, Sr. and Jean Marchetti, passed at the age of 64 on October 17, 2024 in Edgewater, FL. He fought his battle with COPD courageously and without complaint. He passed peacefully at home with his wife, children, and furbaby by his side.

At a young age, he met the love of his life, his wife Cindy, at the Beacon Restaurant. They married on October 14,1978, and he spent the rest of his days sharing all of life’s adventures with her. They were blessed to have celebrated 46 years of loving one another, during this time they enjoyed many excursions. They made their home in Edgewater, raising their five children there. Although John was a man of few words, his heart was huge.

John was a Florida native and a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of New Smyrna Beach High School class of 1978. John began working in construction, then he worked for Winn-Dixie for several years. He went on to become the owner operator of Cory’s Lawn Service for 31 years and Cory’s Treasures, both he took great pride in. Then, he moved on to work for the City of New Smyrna Beach Parks & Recreation for several years, followed by Publix before retiring in 2021.

John found the most joy in being called husband, dad, grandpa, and friend by those he loved most. The many gatherings over the years, at their home, with family and friends brought him happiness, as did the simplicity of just hanging out with his little sidekick Georgia watching the history channel. Going hunting with friends in Georgia provided him time to experience the tranquility of the woods that he loved so much. He was always so excited to attend events such as NASCAR Races, Richard Petty his all-time favorite and College Football games, FSU Noles of course being the best. He also loved doing fireworks, he would always have his little fireworks savings container so when July 4th came he was ready. Caring for his yard and learning about history were also passions that provided him great pleasure.  But if you really wanted him to smile give him a scratch off lottery ticket of any kind, didn’t win often but he loved them.

In his earlier years, he was a member of the Edgewater Volunteer Fire Dept., an avid bowler participating in local leagues and a softball coach for more than twelve years.

John is survived by his loving wife Cindy, their furbaby and his devoted buddy Georgia, the pride and joy of his life, their children Tina Cowart, Brad (Kelly) Cory, Sandra Cory, Amanda Cory, Courtland Cory. Their grandchildren Tyisha, Sjohntaye, and Chandler. Their great grandchildren, Annalee, Sophia, Wesley, Dempsey & Navari. John is also survived by his mother, Jean Marchetti, Stepfather Fred Marchetti, sisters Mary Beth Godwin, Linda Marchetti,  brother Brian Clerkin, and 6 additional siblings.  Also, his sister-in-law Janetta (Brian) Gamache, Edgewater; several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many friends. John was preceded in death by his great grandson Brody, his father, John (Jack) Cory, Sr, stepmother, Joan Clerkin, and three brothers.

Although John’s daily physical presence will be sorely missed by all, he will forever live in their hearts.

In remembrance of John’s love of NASCAR and College Football, the family is requesting those attending John’s Celebration of Life wear either a Nascar Racing or College Football T-shirt, dress for the Celebration is casual.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society at 1 N. Causeway, New Smyrna Beach, FL on Wednesday October 30th from 2pm-4pm where family and friends are invited to share their memories and pay tribute to him. I only knew John through Cindy. John would, on occasion, stop by at the Meals on Wheels site in Port Orange where his beloved wife Cindy worked. He would come to help her out on busy days and run errands for her. He would also liven up the dinning site by dressing in costume at Halloween time. I remember the time he came dressed as a cow with udders hanging out! John was always kind and loving to Cindy. One time when my husband and I were getting ready for a trip to India, he whispered to me, "Cindy would love to go with you to India sometime". He was exceptionally hard working and did what it took to support his family, including picking up, cleaning up and fixing up stuff for their resale store. You were loved and respected for the work that you did, John. You will be truly missed by your loving wife, family and friends. Rest in peace.
