Obituary

Jon Joseph Minerd died in Hospice on January 9, 2021 in Edgewater, Florida at the age of 74.

Jon is survived by his three children, Jessica Minerd-Massey of Edgewater, Florida; Shawn Minerd of Kansas City, Missouri; and Alicia (Eric) Zwieg (nèe Minerd) of Raleigh, North Carolina, his two grandsons Sky Massey of Orchard Park, New York and Ethan Massey of Jacksonville, Florida. Also surviving are his siblings Tim (Gerry) Minerd of Rochester, NY; Jim Minerd of Rochester, NY; Kathy (Bill) Consler (nèe Minerd) of Charlotte, NC; and Ron (Cheri) Minerd of Lancaster, NC. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother William Minerd, and his half-brother Lynn Winters.

Jon was born on February 27,1946 in Hatboro, PA to Melvin Minerd and Hannah Minerd (nèe Guzzy). He graduated from Griffith Institute High School in 1964 and went on to study industrial engineering and mathematics at the University of Rochester, University of Niagara, Onondaga Community College, and Erie Community college. John worked as a field service engineer for the Hydrapoint division of Moog, Inc in East Aurora, NY for 29 years which took him to many different countries around the world. He retired in 2008.

Jon was a letterman football player at Griffith Institute which lead to being a lifelong football fan. He enjoyed cheering on (and yelling at) his favorite hometown team, the Buffalo Bills. Jon enjoyed playing music on his guitar and bodhran drum from Ireland. He was an avid ham radio enthusiast and had a passion for sci-fi and all things mechanical. He traveled up and down the east coast US and in Canada competing in over 20 Rally car races as an SCCA Pro Rally driver and was also a volunteer firefighter with the Yorkshire NY Volunteer Fire Department. Later in life he became interested in anything and everything related to trains.

Jon enjoyed adventure and his laugh and smile will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a great Dad with a kind heart and always willing to help.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff of Halifax Health Hospice Care in Edgewater, Florida for providing caring end of life support.

Jon was my classmate in the Class of 1964. We were football teammates. Jon and I spent time together on a committee to plan our 40, 45, 50 and 55 year reunions. We were good friends in school and after. He will definitely be missed!

I have many great memories of Jon both small & large from the early years (1953) at St. Al’s to GI and Erie Tech. and the many years thereafter up through today. I was excited and looking forward to getting together with him in Lakewood, FL this summer, but I guess that will have to wait until the next life ...

Jon was my mentor... he taught me how to be a middle child and still get respect. How to steal Moms Christmas cookies and play the guitar.
He taught me how to avoid trouble (His advice...RUN) and he showed me how to party like I was an 18 year old when I was only 13.
He was happy, kind and loving and most importantly he was my brother.
His passing has left a void in my heart and I will miss him very much as everyone who knew and loved him will.

Jon’s insistence and perseverance in his job at Moog, Inc for 29 years were outstanding! This trait showed up when he was a baby by his insistence to jumping off our porch whether he was going to be caught in the process or fall to the ground. I’m sure this characteristic showed up in him many, many more times. He was special and loved by many.
