Obituary for James and Karen Zahnen
James Zahnen, 80, and Karen Zahnen, 79, passed away within a week of each other in October 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and kindness. James passed away on October 17, 2024, at Halifax Hospital, and Karen on October 10, 2024, at Advent Health. Their deep connection, shared values, and commitment to family and community defined their lives.
James Zahnen was born on December 9, 1943, to Joseph and Lena Zahnen. Known for his skill and precision, James enjoyed a successful career as an Electrical Engineer at Homac, where his contributions were widely respected. James was a founding member of the Advanced Technology Center (ATC), this exhibited his dedication to his field and extended to his community service. Outside of work, he was an active member of the local Rotary Club and the Quarterback Club, where he forged lasting friendships and gave back to the community. His presence was marked by his generosity, humor, and unwavering support for those around him.
Karen Zahnen was born on November 25, 1944, to Rudolph and Evelyn Jurinek. She dedicated over 25 years as an Administrative Assistant in the Athletics Department at Bethune-Cookman University, where she was beloved by staff, students, and colleagues alike. Karen’s warmth, organizational skill, and kindness made her an indispensable part of the team. Her commitment to the university and the people she worked with left a lasting impact on those who knew her.
James is survived by his brother Joseph and sister Marian, and Karen by her sisters Nadine and Lynn. Together, they are survived by their two sons, Jeffrey (spouse: Jenni) and Kevin (spouse: Sabrina), their cherished grandchildren Joseph and Danielle, and their beloved pets, who brought them joy and companionship.
Known for their warmth, generosity, and willingness to lend a helping hand, James and Karen’s lives were defined by love—for each other, their family, friends, and community. Their kindness and compassionate spirits left a lasting impression on everyone they met. Their legacy will continue to inspire those who were lucky enough to know them.
Services for Jim and Karen Zahnen will be held on November 16, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Ormond Beach, followed by burial at Shady Rest Cemetery in Holly Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the James & Karen Zahnen Memorial Scholarship, benefitting students at the Advanced Technology Center (ATC).
