Obituary

Katie was born in Perry, Florida, to James Owen and Maude Anise Green, the second of seven children. She met her “man in uniform”, Lt. Marvin H Becker, while he was training to be a fighter pilot close to Perry. She was the counter girl at the local Soda Fountain when he strolled in. They married on September 28, 1944, and settled in Ann Arbor, Michigan, his hometown, after WW2 and raised three children. After 40 years in cold Michigan, Katie told Marvin “the next 40 years are going to be in Florida!” She retired as head of Human Resources at the Ann Arbor K-Mart and they chose Port Orange, Florida to call home. She almost made the 40 years but sadly Marvin only enjoyed 13 years in sunny Florida.

Katie loved watching “American Bandstand” in the ‘50s and “The Bachelor” and “Dancing With The Stars” more recently. But her very favorites were watching baseball (Brighton High School, Detroit Tigers, and Atlanta Braves), college football (mostly Michigan Wolverines), golf, and tennis (especially Rory McElroy and Novak Djokovic). Despite never having played any of those sports she was very knowledgeable of the rules, the strategy and the scoring of all of them, even tennis

Most of all she loved her family but sadly outlived 5 of her siblings, survived by only Clarence Green (Arlene) of Daytona Beach. She also—to her profound grief—outlived her youngest son, John M. Becker, 1950-2001, and her oldest son, James H. Becker, 1945-2020.

Many of us left behind will always remember her famous banana pudding and coconut cream pie, her frequently requested fried chicken, and grits and eggs the Green/Becker/Carrow way. And, of course, the best homemade sweet tea ever!

She was a good friend to many, especially Alice Clark and Millie Call. She was a loving wife, a phenomenal mother, and an awesome Grandma to 8. She leaves to cherish her memory daughter, Mary Carrow, son-in-law Mark Carrow, and daughter-in-law, Jan Becker. Also grandchildren – James Becker (Lisa), Patrick Becker (Denise), Aaron Becker, Joel Becker (Jayanthi), Joanne Becker, Christopher Carrow (Nicole), Tiffany Call (Larry), and Elise Oscar (J R). Also 14 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren.

Rest in Peace Mom/Grandma/Granny. Job well done!

Donations could be made to Halifax Hospice, Port Orange. They were incredibly loving and caring in their care of Katie and her family throughout her decline and to the end.
