Obituary
Kenneth James Childress, 62, of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly while visiting loved ones in Florida. Although much too soon, Kenny went quickly, living his life to the fullest as usual. His loved ones take care in knowing, although the timing was entirely too soon, he did not suffer or prolong in pain.
Kenny was born on July 12, 1962, to Harold and Marjorie Childress. Kenny is survived by his wife, Bonnie, daughter Brittney, and beloved dog Tony Bennett. Kenny is also proceeded in life by his brother Marshall (Luann) Childress, and children Gavin and Kaitlyn; his mother-in-law, Judy Knecht, and in-laws Bobby Knecht and Beth (Bobby) Kohler. Kenny was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, cousin and uncle to his extensive family both in America and overseas in Scotland.
Kenny “Chilly” Childress was a graduate of Wilson Memorial High School, where he first noticed his interest in learning how various things worked. His mechanical inclination further served him in building an industrious career at McKee Foods as a leader with the Maintenance team. In his 33 years at McKee, he took great pride in helping his company thrive and viewed those who he led as members of family.
Kenny had an astoundingly caring nature towards all. All who were able to meet him, quickly knew him as the type to give the shirt off his back or help someone any way he knew how. Whether a lifelong friend from school, a fellow colleague or church member, or a new acquaintance met along the way, Kenny had a natural ability to include others and extend a helping hand.
Kenny was an avid and extremely competitive sports fan who loved playing golf, cornhole, foosball, pool and softball, plus countless others over the years. Known by his teammates, and competitors alike, as “Chilly”, his love of the game was guaranteed to inspire a fun time by all.
Kenny then turned in his glove for a coach’s whistle as he went on to coach his daughter in several youth baseball, basketball and travel softball teams. Never one to miss a practice in the backyard or game, he was always ever present even to the out of state away games.
Kenny’s life was marked by his love for family, friends, and simple pleasures that brought people together. A self-proclaimed beach bum, he cherished countless trips to the Outer Banks where he shared many memories with friends and family alike. His quick wit and sense of humor are often fondly remembered and reminisced. Kenny’s family will be holding a Celebration of Life in the near future. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Kenny leaves behind a multitude of aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews on both the Childress and McIntosh/Ferguson sides of his family. Although widely spread, they remain a loving and close-knit family.
