Obituary
With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Lee Griffith, who departed this world on August 23. A beacon of love, strength, and devotion, Lee’s life was a testament to his commitment to family, his passion for golf, and his deep, 60-year connection to Auburn University and Auburn Football.
Born on August 20, 1940, in Merrick, NY, Lee embraced the roles of loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend with boundless warmth, humility, sincerity and wisdom.
Auburn Football held a special place in Lee’s heart, shaping his life’s journey in profound ways – playing, recruiting, and coaching for Shug Jordan. He poured his soul into the game and transferred the lessons he learned on and off the field to success in business and life. In 2013, he was honored to receive Auburn University’s Walter Gilbert Award for former student-athletes who achieve excellence after graduation.
Lee’s affinity for the game of golf was also a defining part of his life. A self-described “golf nut”, the greens and fairways (and sometimes trees) were his sanctuary; he was fortunate to have played many of the world’s finest courses. Lee was especially proud to be a member of Pine Valley Golf Club for more than 30 years.
Professionally, Lee rose through the ranks at Scott Paper Company and Scott Paper Company Limited from a regional salesman to President, Chairman and CEO. After retiring from Scott Paper, he was tapped to be President of Household Products for Sunbeam Corporation. Then, after retirement from the corporate world, Lee’s passion led him to transform the Hidden Lakes Golf Club in New Smyrna Beach to a first-rate course, winning awards and delivering an epic golf experience. He also served the NSB community as a leader in the Chamber of Commerce and on the board of the New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission.
Lee leaves behind his loving wife, Kathy (Vail) Griffith, his children Deborah Griffith, Michael Griffith, James Stratton and Paul Stratton, and his four cherished grandchildren. Though Lee has left this world, his spirit lives on in the love he shared, the lessons he imparted, and the memories he gifted us. His legacy serves as a reminder to embrace life’s passions and treasure every moment with our loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, embodying Lee’s commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
May Lee’s soul find eternal peace, and may we find comfort in the memories we shared and the love that will forever bind us together. War Eagle Forever.
Sending love and light to Kathy and family. May your memories bring you solace during this difficult time.
Our deepest condolences to you Kathy and your loved ones in the passing of Lee. He was a gentleman and friend who will be missed by all in this community and all the people whose lives he touched. We will remember him through his kindness and remarkable memory. May you have peace and may he rest in the arms of God.
