Obituary

Lewis “Stretch” Smedes Jr., 62, of Orlando, FL, passed away on July 19, 2020 with his wife, Kathleen Smedes, by his side. They shared over 30 years together.

Lewis was born to Lewis and Grace (Brouwer) Smedes on October 10, 1957 at St. John Hospital in Detroit, MI. He graduated from Paul Cousino Senior High School in Warren, Michigan. He was a talented, hardworking CNC Machine Operator.

Lewis was a gifted mechanic. He had a passion for Muscle Cars and had just began to enjoy his 2006 Rausch Mustang. When not in his own garage, Stretch could be found at his close friend, Davis Medina’s garage. On cool, clear days Lewis enjoyed flying his RC airplanes at RCACF RC Flying Club in Apopka, FL. Lewis enjoyed shooting a variety of guns with his family and friends, especially his brother, Andrew, and son, Michael. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren playing a game of UNO that always involved cheating and laughter. He was a faithful husband, proud father and grandfather and loyal friend.

Lewis is survived by his beloved wife Kathleen, son Michael Smedes, stepson James Welchance III, stepdaughter Kelly (Aric) Repstien. His four cherished grandchildren – Krysta Hohn, Chase and Glen Repstien, and Willow Welchance. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Andrew Smedes, Lois Smedes, Kathleen Atkinson, Patricia Pluszczynski, Gerald Smedes, Annette Patiry and Jefferey Smedes, as well as, numerous adored nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Grace Smedes and sister Janet DeFrance.
There will be a celebration of Lewis’ life in the future when the time is right. We ask that you just think of him and remember his spirit for life.

The family would like to thank Orange County Fire Rescue, Advent Health’s Flight team, Advent Health Orlando’s Critical Care team of doctors and nurses for their extraordinary care of Lewis and our family during this difficult time.
