Shields, Margaret (Peg), 81, New Smyrna Beach FL passed away Thursday, September 25, 2008 at Halifax Medical Center. Peg was born November 28, 1926 in Queens, NY to the late Loretta (Kiley) and Martin Gannon. She graduated from Jamaica High School and Mary Immaculate School of Nursing. In 1953, she married Bob Shields and they settled in Franklin Square, New York where they lived for over 40 years. She was an active member of St Catherine of Sienna Parish where she was a past president of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. While raising four children, Peg returned to the nursing profession as a Clinical Instructor at BOCES III/Wilson Tech, Western Suffolk, New York. During this time she completed her undergraduate degree at Empire State College and obtained a Masters Degree from New York University. She retired from BOCES as Director of Health Occupations. After retirement she and Bob relocated to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. She was an active Communicant at Our Lady Star of the Sea, New Smyrna Beach. Peg was a member of the Smyrna Yacht Club where she met many dear friends. Peg believed strongly in education and was a dedicated member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She was an avid bridge player and used her enthusiasm to support the AAUW scholarship fund. She was named AAUW’s NSB Branch Woman of the Year, 2007-08. Peg’s greatest joy was her family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory Bob, her loving husband of 55 years; her children and their spouses, Joe (Peg) of Framingham, Mass, Anne (John) Cartafalsa of Redding, Ct. Pat (Rob) McHale of Belle Harbor, NY. and Helen(Rich) Poje of Lynbrook, NY; eight grandchildren, Dan, Jack, Ryan, Hannah, Emily, Julia, Colleen and Dylan: sister-in-law, Eleanor Gannon and many nieces and nephews. Peg is survived by a host of family, friends, classmates and co-workers who added joy and love to her life and she did to theirs.
