Obituary
Born April 8, 1930 in Northampton County, North Carolina, to Aubrey and Ursula Griffin, Margaret Elizabeth (Betty) Griffin was raised by her paternal grandparents, Nathan and Claudia Griffin. After graduating from Woodland High School, she briefly attended the University of North Carolina Greensboro before returning to her childhood home to marry Earl Martin. They lived briefly in Portsmouth, Virginia before moving to Conway, Earl’s hometown, where their daughters were born. Betty was active in Conway Baptist Church where she led the children’s choir for several years as well as a Girl Scouts troop.
In 1966 the family moved to Leesburg and Betty began employment with the Lake County Health Department where she remained an employee until her retirement. She was active in several civic organizations as well as Gold Wing Road Riders, a Honda motorcycle club. She joined Lake Square Presbyterian Church, now Graceway Church, and was an active member for many years. She particularly enjoyed singing in the choir and serving as a deacon. Betty loved gardening, feeding the birds in her yard, playing the piano, and knitting. She kept in frequent touch with her childhood friends throughout her life.
She is survived by: her sister, Frances Hoggard, Raleigh NC; daughters Elizabeth (Beth) Martin of Orlando FL and LeJene Normann of Kirkland WA; granddaughters, Maura (Michael) Gillon of Orlando FL and Caitlin (Gage) Elliott of Spring Lake NC; great grandchildren Kai Jura, Callie Jura, Graham Elliott, Brooke Elliott, Gordon (Gordy) Gillon and Katie Gillon.
Funeral services will be held March 22, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Graceway Church, Leesburg. Interment will follow at a later date in Conway NC. The family extends special thanks to the kind and caring staff of Bedrock Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Lake Eustis and Cornerstone Hospice.
