Obituary

Port Orange, Florida—Marie Frances (Sullivan) Maggiore, 98, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2023, in the loving arms of her daughter, Cathy. Marie, christened as Mary Frances, was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 6, 1925, the daughter of James and Catherine (Sullivan) Varallo. A resident of Long Island for 50 years, she moved to Port Orange’s “Colony in the Wood” community in 2000 to live out her retirement years. Marie began her professional career working as a secretary on Wall Street in New York City in the 1940s. Marie met her loving husband, Anthony (Tony) in 1948, at a school dance at St. Michael’s Church on Jermone Avenue in Brooklyn. They married on August 12, 1950, and moved to Brentwood, Long Island to raise their three children: Tony, James, and Cathy. In addition to raising her family, Marie worked for decades at department stores, including Gimbel’s and J.C. Penney—where she was proud to still be able to use her employee discount (and treat her children and grandchildren to bargains) well into her 90s.

While living on Long Island, Marie took delight in taking frequent trips to Atlantic City to play the slot machines. She loved to talk about the day the slots rewarded her with winnings of $2,000—and joked about riding home in a limousine the next time she won it big. Even at 98, Marie still loved to go “out on the town”—one of her secrets to maintaining her perpetual youth. She especially enjoyed hearing her grandson, Daniel, play his drums in various bands amidst the night spots in the Florida environs. Marie also looked forward to water aerobics, socializing at weekly Tops meetings, and was a regular attendee at Sunday Mass (St. Anne’s in Brentwood, and Our Lady of Hope in Port Orange, and Blessed Sacrament in New Smyrna Beach) until the years slowed her down.

Marie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, Tony, their first son Tony, and many friends. She will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her, especially her son, James; daughter, Cathy (Steen) Lunde; and grandchildren Becky, Paul, Alice, Emily, Daniel, and Jarrod—all of whom are proud to carry on her legacy by sharing stories and memories. Moving forward, many summer sojourns will be held aboard “The Queen Marie,” the family pontoon boat named in Marie’s honor—and christened in her presence.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Community Center in the Colony in the Wood Community on Saturday, March 2, at 11 AM, with lunch at noon—the same place where dozens of family and friends gathered to celebrate Marie when she turned 90 in 2015.

In lieu of flowers, Marie’s family asks you to raise a glass of red wine (another of Marie’s secret to maintaining youth and vigor) or order a fresh (“real”) turkey sandwich from your favorite diner in her honor.
