Obituary

Marvin J. Market, 79, Fort Myers, Florida (formally of Eau Claire, Wisconsin,) passed away Sunday, May 22, 2022 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Marv was born on February 12, 1943 to Juel and Peg Market in Eau Claire, Wisconsin where he grew up with four siblings and graduated from Memorial High School. He attended the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire before joining the family business, Market and Johnson, a leading construction management and general contracting company in the Midwest before eventually becoming President in 1980 until his retirement in 1999.

On July 17, 1965 he married Sandra J. Nelson at first Lutheran Church in Eau Claire and together Marv and Sandra raised three children spending many summers boating on the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers where he honed his love of boating.  After the loss of his first wife in 1999 Marv moved full time to Fort Myers, Florida where he lived aboard his 60 foot Viking sport cruiser Dee Light for over 20 years. There he met and married Carol Sutliffe on January 16, 2010.  Marv and Carol were members of Royal Palm Yacht Club in Fort Myers where he served as Commodore for 2 years. Both were very active in the Club’s activities and made many long lasting friendships.

During Marv’s career and life as a boater he always had an interest in weather forecasting. This interest led to his development of Marv’s Weather Service, a free web service that provides daily current, wind and sea data with location specific buoy weather information and tropical weather reports. It was his passion and mission to make pleasure boating safer and more comfortable for the recreational boater. Marv was a licensed Captain with the US Coast Guard.

Marv also had a lifelong love of photography and enjoyed sharing his skills by photographing gatherings with friends and family as well as many public events which he shared through his Deelight website.

Surviving is his wife Carol; his daughter Jewel (Bob) Market Peterson of Barron, Wisconsin; sons Jon (Jennifer) Market of Edina, Minnesota and Jeff (Sonia) Market of Scottsdale, Arizona; grandchildren Marcus and Fran Peterson of Barron, Wisconsin and brother Dan (Debbie) Market of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  He was preceded in death by his first wife Sandra, his parents Juel and Peg Market and siblings Judy (James) Derouin, Ron Market and Howard Market.

Marv and Sandra were founding members of the Eau Claire Community Foundation and memorials may be made in Marv’s name by visiting www.eccfwi.org

Final arrangements have been provided by Baldwin Brothers Funeral and Cremation Society with interment at a later date in Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Marv was mentor to me in the Jaycees also. This is a leadership organization and Leadership is what Marv demonstrated. He was President of the large Eau Claire Jaycees and moved up the ladder to become President of the Wisconsin Jaycees. This was no easy task for someone from northern Wisconsin. The Milwaukee and Madison group wanted to control every thing but Marv overcame this with his leadership. The Wisconsin Jaycees had over 200 chapters and 13000 members, that meant lots of travel from Eau Claire to the rest of the state. It was always great to see Marv and Sandy with Jewel, Jeff and Jon in tow at our state meetings. Marv thanks for all you did for me and the friendship.

My husband Harry and I met Marv in early 2000's @ Legacy Marina in Ft. Myers and so enjoyed him and then Carol at the many boating gatherings and events--he was always smiling and interested in everybody and everything. When I heard of his passing although certainly sad, it brought back wonderful memories of Marv and his presence in the boating community @ Legacy.
My condolences and sympathy to Carol and family.

Marv was a huge influence on a large number of people who got to know him as "Joe Jaycee". He served the Eau Claire Jaycees and the Wisconsin Jaycees to provide an example of leadership and personal development that inspired many. I had the privilege to call Marv a good Jaycee friend and mentor. Many others would say the same. Miss you, Marv.
