Obituary
Mary Ann Moore Turner passed away January 1st, 2022, at Chatham Glen in The Villages, Florida.
Mary Ann was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1938 to the late Dr. Donald F. Moore and Carola Moore. She loved music and books and discovering the new places her family would move because of her father’s military and job requirements. A graduate of Du Pont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky, she had expanded her music interests into playing the oboe as well as singing while attending school. She elected to attend University of Michigan at Ann Arbor following in family member’s footsteps. This loyalty to, and enthusiasm for the University of Michigan was pervasive in Mary Ann’s life and she shared it with anyone who knew her. It was here that she met and married her late husband, David Maynard Turner.
Between 1958 and 1980, Mary Ann was very involved in her leadership in Girl Scouts. From Troop leader to neighborhood Cookie Chairperson, Mary Ann involved her whole family in all aspects of the Girl Scouts wherever the family lived, from Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland, or Chicago, she led troops and worked extensively with the Girl Scout Councils.
As their children grew, Mary Ann endeavored to provide care to others. First working in the medical field in managed health care and subsequently, in California as the Activities Director for an Alzheimer’s day care facility. It was in this job she found friendships and enjoyment, as she helped families and patients to learn to enjoy life. Her smile and her laughter were infectious. She continued to enamor others when she lived at Victory Lakes Independent Living in Illinois, and in her last months in Florida.
Mary Ann and David truly enjoyed their 4 children: Debbie Turner (Jim), Brenda Huemann (Tony), Marsha Kolb (Rich), & Douglass Turner (Sandy), 10 grandchildren: Sierra, AJ, Laura, Marcus, Ricky, Donald, Peter, Alison, Erika, and Douglass and most recently, Mary Ann reveled in her 5 great grandchildren: Anthony, Josephine, Charlotte, Ricky, and Paige. She is survived by her sisters, Kathy Fedders (Jerry) and Carole Jo Hoehne (Richard). The family would like express deep appreciation to all her friends and extended family who have lovingly touched Mary Ann’s life with laughter, joy, and caring….it is truly a memorial to a great lady to have so many people who care. It is her legacy of family, of laughter, and of love that will carry on.
A Celebration of Life will be organized for later this calendar year. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in Mary Ann Turner’s name to either ALZ.org, in support of her favorite charity, or her favorite marching band at University of Michigan’s scholarship fund, Marching Band.
