Mary Mae McNamee (Whaley) a native of New Smyrna Beach and a 1952 graduate of New Smyrna High School passed away January 31, 2010 at Bert Fish Medical Center after a lengthy battle with MDS. She met her husband, Robert “Mac” while he was stationed at Patrick Air Force Base, FL and they were married in August 1956. A totally devoted military wife she took the responsibility and difficult task of raising three children while Mac performed duty in Germany, Vietnam and Thailand. After 22 years of service life Mary Mae returned to the local area and settled down in Samsula and participated, as a volunteer in all the schools, sports and club activities. She was a coach, team mother, driver and real motivator in any endeavor the kids decided to undertake. Life moved on to the fast lane after that as six grandchildren were brought into this world and she a very big part of all of their lives. She never had a cross word for anyone and she could find good even in bad situations. She was a crafter and traveled throughout Florida and as far away as Tennessee to display and sell her magnificent work for eleven years. Crafts were a hobby to her because her real love was working in her flower garden with the help of the grandchildren. She loved to travel and go to the mountains and celebrate the holidays, but trips became very infrequent during the last few years. Mary Mae was Commander-in-Chief in her household and will be remembered as a hard working person with deep love and devotion to all of her family members. Left to cherish her accomplishments and memories are her husband of 53 years, Mac, who says no one will miss her more after such a wonderful loving relationship. She leaves behind a sister, Jeanette Reid, Laverne, AL, aunt, Lucille Lutz; son, Bo and daughter-in-law, Merry, son, Brian, daughter-in-law, Pam, daughter, Sharon, son-in-law, Glenn; six grandchildren, Justin, Christie, Brittany, McKennzie, Sydney, and Dylan, and nephews, nieces and cousins in the local area.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 1737 N. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite 140, Daytona Beach, 32117.
