Obituary
Mary Holladay Rountree, loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away March 25, 2022, at the age of 82 after a long battle with dementia.
She was preceded in death by her father Emmett J Holladay, mother Margurite Holladay, and husband Neil M Rountree.
Mary’s childhood was divided between her hometown of Plantersville, Alabama and traveling from school to school as her family moved often for her father’s job. After graduating from secretarial school in Selma, her last move with her parents was to Punta Gorda, Florida where she met Neil. They married in October of 1960 and had two children- Curtis Neil Rountree and Pamela Denise Rountree.
Mary would welcome anyone into their home, feed them well and spent hours digging around in her flowerbeds. More often than not, she would be the designated pitcher for neighborhood baseball games out in the field behind the house. She was a right-handed woman who thought she played golf but would only ever use a left-handed 5-iron; the truth is, she was there for the social aspect. She always claimed she was a year older than she was for some misguided notion that was never understood. She held onto this story so long that her 50th birthday was celebrated by her closest friends on her 49th.
The relationship between Mary and Neil was volatile but loving. After he passed away in 2013, it was like small pieces of her chipped away, little by little. Hospice was engaged in January of this year. She remained happy and comfortable but passed in her sleep less than two months later.
Mary is survived by son Curtis, daughter Pamela, and granddaughters Whitney and Darcy.
