Mary married Herbert Tekip in Key West, Florida in 1957. They made their home in Tampa. She was an executive secretary and experienced bookkeeper and traveled with the Royal American Shows throughout the country before becoming a federal employee at U.S. Naval Station in Key West.

After retiring, she moved to Charlotte County where she volunteered at the Peace River Wildlife Center. MJ was a Lifetime Honorary Member of the Florida Sheriffs Association, an honorary member of the American Legion Post 110 where she served as President of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 110 and was a member of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Port Charlotte. Being a very generous person, she contributed to the Animal Anticruelty Society, the Audubon Society and the National Geographic Society among others. A very talented artist, she painted many Florida scenes on old state and city maps. Kippy, Catosa, Kita, Kima, Frankie, and Gucci and her other animals all had a good home with MJ.
