Obituary
Mary Jane Tekip, well known as MJ, went to our Lord in heaven on Saturday, March 4. She was the oldest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Alex Slaby of South Bend, Indiana. She was one of nine children.
Mary married Herbert Tekip in Key West, Florida in 1957. They made their home in Tampa. She was an executive secretary and experienced bookkeeper and traveled with the Royal American Shows throughout the country before becoming a federal employee at U.S. Naval Station in Key West.
After retiring, she moved to Charlotte County where she volunteered at the Peace River Wildlife Center. MJ was a Lifetime Honorary Member of the Florida Sheriffs Association, an honorary member of the American Legion Post 110 where she served as President of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 110 and was a member of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Port Charlotte. Being a very generous person, she contributed to the Animal Anticruelty Society, the Audubon Society and the National Geographic Society among others. A very talented artist, she painted many Florida scenes on old state and city maps. Kippy, Catosa, Kita, Kima, Frankie, and Gucci and her other animals all had a good home with MJ.
She was preceded by her parents, her husband, her sisters; Rose Patricia and Carol Jean and her brothers; Aloysius and Vincent. She was a loving Aunt to her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. MJ enjoyed the friendships of many. She will be interred next t her husband in the Greater Tampa Showman’s Association Cemetery.
Her family wishes to thank all of the medical personnel who took care of Mary. She was a resident of Brookdale in Port Charlotte.
