Thank you all for coming to St. Charles for the funeral mass of Maurice "Beamis" Saunders, today and all those who couldn't attend but were kind enough to have remembered him in their thoughts prayers and condolences and gorgeous flowers. I think he would have been very humbled and honoured by the beautiful and moving service delivered by Father Phil and the musician and choir. God bless you all, Beannach Dé libh go léir.

We thought these memorabilia would be an appropriate representation of some of Dad's main interests and passions to accompany him into the afterlife (I got this idea from the ancient Egyptians). Here is a brief insight into some of the items being buried with him: the cross in the centre is made out of Irish peat bog, so that even though he is being buried in Florida he is still laying in Irish earth. The same for the green Connemara marble rosary beads. In the middle is one of his Irish Feis metals for storytelling (who would have figured). On each side are just 2 of his numerous US Senior Olympics athletic victory metals (he won so many that the other contestants wanted him banned from competitions). His tricolour scarf and All Ireland Dublin GAA jersey for his proud native Dubliner attitude. In the back is a statue of the Wexford United Irishman Pikemen as it highlight his rebel Wexford heritage on his mother (Mary Joe Morris) side. And of course, the Irish national flag, as he was not just a proud Irishman but he truly embodied the spirit of Ireland, itself. Na laga Dia thú

I feel both honoured and privileged to be the son of my late father: Maurice "Beamis" Saunders of Dublin, Ireland, Port Washington, NY and most recently, Port Charlotte FL. He was a larger than life character, great story teller and humourist, that no biography or T.V. mini series could ever do justice to. Born in Dublin, Ireland my Dad was not just Irish, he was Ireland itself and his deep love and appreciation for his native land, culture, history, music, song, story, and freedom and independence ran deeply in his blood and every breath he took. He had no less love for his adopted country America and was always proud to live, work, contribute, and raise money exhaustively for charity and the benefit of all and was proud to be both an New Yorker and a "Florida Man". They say when an elderly person dies that a library is burned down: that is most certainly true of my father and his loss is like the Great Library of Alexandria itself, burning to the ground. He was unique, amazing, hilarious and absolutely irreplaceable. My Dad truly embodies the spirit of the old Irish saying: "Ni Bheidh a Leithis aris ann" - his likes will never be seen again. We all miss him, we love him and wish him eternal peace and happiness in a world much better than this one. Gra mhor i gconni - love always and forever
