Obituary
Melvin J. Wert, 78, of Lehigh Acres, passed away May 3, 2020, at Oakbrook Health and Rehabilitation Center, in Labelle, FL. Born November 2, 1941, Mel and his wife Dorothy Mae moved to Immokalee, FL., in 1966, in a voluntary service assignment providing child care for the children of migrant workers. Melvin taught elementary school for over 35 years in Immokalee, and made lasting friendships with fellow teachers, aides, and the community at People’s Chapel Mennonite Church; where he served in many capacities. In retirement, Mel and his wife enjoyed Florida’s natural beauty and spending time supporting friends and service projects at Covenant Presbyterian where they were members and Mel served as deacon. Mel loved family and was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Mae, his daughter Katrina Wert of Denver, CO., (husband Chris Stewart), son Konrad Wert of Kerrville, TX., (wife Jenny Gillespie), and four grandchildren , Jonah, Kai, Honora Mae, and Emma. He is also survived by three siblings, Charles Wert of Lititz, PA., Roy Wert of Mt. Gretna, PA., and Esther (Wert) Clymer of Lititz, PA. One of his great joys was sharing stories of his siblings and cousins. Mel’s family is celebrating his life privately at this time. A celebration of life will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the deacon’s fund at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society, Fort Myers, assisted with arrangements.
