Merle Hugh Crandall, 77 of Edgewater died May 3, 2010. Merle was born on April 26, 1933 to Gertrude Peabody and Hugh R. Crandall.
He spent three years in the Marine Corps, serving as a Sergeant in the Korean War and married Patricia Mirek Crandall, on January 29, 1955.
Merle worked at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Co. for 15 years, then for the Town of Chautauqua, NY for twenty years, retiring as the Highway Superintendent.
Merle enjoyed hunting, fishing, building new homes, remodeling old ones, travel and painting, as well as his family and friends. He was a Charter Member of the Mayville VFW #8647, the Chautauqua County Highway Superintendent’s Association and the United Steelworkers of America Local 2693 and American Legion Post #0493 in Mayville and attended St. Gerard’s Mission Church in Edgewater.
Merle survived by his wife, Pat, three sons, Michael M. of Panama, New York, Joseph H. of Cattaraugus, New York, and John G. of Mayville, New York; nine grandchildren, a sister, Donna J. Ellis of Ocala, Florida and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations are requested to Hospice of Volusia /Flagler, 3800 Woodbrair Trail, Port Orange, 32129.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
I'm sorry for your loss. Merle was always one of my favorite people to work with at the Town.
