Obituary

Michael Paul Roush passed peacefully on January 21, 2023, at the age of 87, in Cape Coral, FL.

Michael was born in Sunbury, PA on April 12, 1935, the only child of the late Paul “Simon” Roush and Sara Ann (nee Gamby) Roush. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Ann (nee Furman) Roush.

His schooling was in Sunbury except from 1942-1949 when his family lived on Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY. He is a graduate of the class of 1953 from Sunbury High School. Michael graduated from Kutztown University in 1957 with a degree in Art Education and later that year started teaching at Sunbury Junior High. In 1974, he joined the high school faculty and advanced to become Art Supervisor of the Shikellamy School District. He retired in 1996 after a forty-year career.

In the 1970’s, he designed the Shikellamy emblem and was commissioned to paint a large portrait of Chief Shikellamy which presently hangs in the high school. His awards include: “Teacher of the Year” for Sunbury High School and in 1989 “Pennsylvania Art Educator of the Year” presented by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association. Other teaching endeavors include drawing classes for the Sunbury Community Center, local YMCA and teaching night classes from 1960-1972 at the Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary.

After retirement, Michael became involved with the Susquehanna Art Society and the Degenstein Library. He continued painting in retirement for fun and by request. For years, he enjoyed making holiday cards and caricature collages for retiring Shikellamy teachers. For a fundraiser in 2019, he donated an interpretive painting of colonial Fort Augusta to the Northumberland County Historical Society. In August 2022, he was the featured artist at a local art gallery in Cape Coral.

Michael and Barbara, along with their love for family, enjoyed international and domestic travel, taking cruises, photography, and collecting memorabilia. Many summer evenings were enjoyed at Knoebel’s Grove as well. For years they retained dual residency in Sunbury, PA then escaped the PA winters to Cape Coral, FL where he derived inspiration for tropical themed paintings.

Michael is survived by two children, Stacey A Roush, of Ft. Myers, FL, and Michael K Roush with his wife Linda of Cape Coral, FL, five granddaughters, Danielle Parcell, Amanda Mazid, Leena Mazid, Genevieve Donnelly and Alexandra Roush and five great-granddaughters.

A private memorial service for the family will be held at Cape Coral Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Susquehanna Art Society.
