Obituary
Michael John Vance, Sr., 75, of Port Orange, Florida, and a long-time Southern Maryland resident, passed away unexpectedly August 24, 2021, at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. He enjoyed life to the fullest as he loved to play golf, watch Baltimore Ravens football and Tampa Bay Rays baseball games on TV, and attend motorcycle rallies and NASCAR races. In his younger days, he enjoyed coaching his children’s teams with Hughesville Little League and playing softball.
He was born February 6, 1946, in London, England. He was the son of Nelson C. Vance, Jr. (d. 1980) and Rose Irene (Ponti) Vance (d. 2011). He graduated from Suitland (Maryland) High School in 1964 and soon afterward became an officer with the Prince George’s County Police Department. After a few years, he joined Washington, D.C., Plumbers Local 5. He worked as a plumbing supervisor in the construction department at Giant Food in Landover, Maryland, eventually retiring as a project manager.
He is survived by his wife, Linda (Fusco) Vance, and his three children, Jeannette R. Wood and her husband, Montgomery (Chesapeake Beach, Maryland); Michael J. Vance, Jr. and his wife, Sara (Owings, Maryland); and Jennifer L. Roberts and her boyfriend, John (Chesapeake Beach, Maryland). He is also survived by three grandchildren ― Jordan R. Gatton of California, Maryland; Taylor B. Jarboe of Mechanicsville, Maryland; and Mackenzie A. Wood of Severn, Maryland ― and two great-granddaughters, Peyton Gatton and Reese Gatton.
He is also survived by his four sisters ― Linda J. Woodside of Gaithersburg, Maryland; Patricia A. Medley of Haymarket, Virginia; Donna L. Herndon of Spring Hill, Florida; and Cynthia R. Luria of Springfield, Virginia ― a brother-in-law, Joseph P. Fusco, Jr. of Clarksburg, Maryland, and a sister-in-law, Peggy J. Blackman of Arnold, Maryland.
Friends and family are invited for a “Celebration of Life” in honor of Mike Vance at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at Michael and Sara Vance’s house ― 7414 Danbridge Lane, Owings, Maryland. The celebration will be casual and held outside.
