Obituary

Nancy Vogle Coalter died peacefully at Advent Health Women’s Hospital in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at the age of 75 after a hard-fought, five-month battle with stage IV lung cancer.

Nancy was born in Gulfport, MS to Robert A. Vogle and Venora Dalton. She was also predeceased by her brother, Bruce Vogle, and husband, James Coalter. “Grancy,” as she was endearingly called by her grandchildren, attended Harrison Central High School where she excelled as a scholar-athlete playing basketball and tennis. After graduating as Valedictorian, she went on to study accounting at Southern Mississippi University, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science.

A trailblazer in many regards, Nancy began an impactful career in finance with Arthur Andersen as the first female in the FL tax division office in the 1970’s. Known for her grit and fearless leadership, she retired as the Chief Financial Officer of a global publishing company at the age of 65. A lifelong competitive athlete, Nancy also participated in several Texas Pro-Amateur golf tournaments during mid-life and coached the “Blue Streak” youth girls’ AAU basketball team to five Florida state championships, including one top-ten finish at the Junior Olympics.

Nancy’s hobbies included golf, tennis, fishing, coaching youth basketball, cooking, and combing the beach for sea glass. She was also an avid stock market investor. During her retirement, Nancy enjoyed volunteering on the Aquarina Golf & Country Club Board of Directors as Treasurer and earned the title of Aquarina Golf Club Ladies’ Champion six consecutive years between 2015 and 2020.

She is survived by her brother, Thomas; her children, Tracy and David; and her grandchildren, Madi (20), Coulter (18), Cameron (17), and Linscott (16).

A private memorial service will be held at sea on Sunday, January 7 off the port of Cape Canaveral, FL. The family will celebrate her life aboard the Obsession and scatter her ashes in the ocean, as Nancy requested, at the same latitude & longitude where her late husband, Jim’s, ashes were scattered in 2017.

Thank you for sharing Nancy's story with those of us who knew her only in recent years. What a impressive career and life she lived! And thank you for sharing your mother, sister, grandmother with us. It was an honor to know her. Nancy will certainly be missed and I pray that you, her family, find comfort in all the years of wonderful memories. With sympathy, Sandy

Nancy Coalter was another mom to me growing up. I will always remember spending time at the Coalter house in Sabal Point swimming and having great conversations with Mrs. Coalter. Dave and I always had fun things to do like basketball in the driveway or riding bikes, Mrs Coalter was out doing work in or around the house and always active. She never sat down. She was a great role model on being the best at what you want to do. She was a competitor and my first basketball coach. She helped fuel my love for the game and now one of my sons plays competitively. I remember Tracy and her teammates making up songs for their Blue Streak team and Mrs Coalter laughing through it all. I remember when she moved to the beach and Dave and I would sit outside with Mrs Coalter and sip coffee as the sun came up and talk about all sorts of things. The great thing about the Coalter family was that every conversation was real. You talked about the good the bad and didn’t need to hide anything in fear of getting in trouble or being embarrassed. Mrs Coalter always treated us with respect and we were able to discuss tough issues in a great environment. God broke the mold after her and I will always have great memories of my time with Mrs Coalter. She is in a better place and thanks to Mrs Coalter’s influence I will continue to push to better myself and my family in all that we do. RIP Mrs Coalter
