Obituary

Pearl Frances Monkiewicz, 99, passed away peacefully in the early hours of December 1, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on March 24, 1926, Pearl was a proud first-generation Ukrainian-American. She graduated from Fordson High School in Dearborn, Michigan in 1943. Pearl married Thomas J. Monkiewicz, and together they shared nearly 70 years of marriage before his passing in April 2017.
Pearl was the beloved matriarch of her family, raising five children and creating a home filled with love, tradition, and her legendary Ukrainian cooking. Her kitchen was the heart of family gatherings, where pierogies, stuffed cabbage, and holiday feasts brought generations together. She was known for her sharp wit, generous heart, and unwavering kindness to all who knew her.

A woman of grace and strength, Pearl never forgot a birthday or anniversary, faithfully sending cards and letters throughout her life. She was an avid traveler, visiting countries around the world while maintaining deep roots in her community. Above all, Pearl believed in the importance of family connection—not through words alone, but through presence, devotion, and the simple act of showing up for those she loved.

Pearl is survived by her children: James Monkiewicz (Sue), Kenneth Monkiewicz (Terry), Linda Meany (Shawn), Michael Monkiewicz (Cindy), and daughter-in-law Barbara Monkiewicz; her grandchildren: Andy (Katie), Laura (Rik), Jeff (Tina), Jason (Leanne), Jennifer (Andrew), Steven (Meghan), Daniela, Benjamin, Lauren (Collin), Thomas, and Kelsey (Michael); fourteen great-grandchildren with one more expected soon; her sister, Dorothy Erwin; and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Monkiewicz, and her son, David Monkiewicz.

Her legacy of love, resilience, and family will continue through all the lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A celebration of life will be held in Michigan in the spring or summer of 2026. The family will provide details at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gentiva Hospice in Ocala, Florida.
