Obituary

On July 6th, 2022 Reverend Peter J. Leddy Sr of 1208 Lakecrest Drive, Apopka, Florida passed following a brief illness after a fall requiring surgery. He was also a veteran.

Pete Leddy was a man of many interests and talents, but as we reflect on his life, the thing we always come back to is love.

Pete loved his family. He was married to Carol (Smeltzer) for 58 years. Father of four, Mary Franks, Ruth (Mike) Conner, Joe (Kelly) Leddy, Harvey (Amanda) Leddy. Grandfather of eight, Michelle, James, Kayleigh, Collin, Rebecca, Rachel, Jax, Stephen. Great Grandfather of five, Maddie, Jackson, Sawyer, Aria, and Madden. There was a tenderness that endured between Pete and Carol, “In good times and in bad,for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health” were vows made and vows kept. Pete supported all of his children despite their occasional poor decision making. He let his children try, even if it meant that they would fail. He believed in conversation, not argument, His love extended to his collection of “out-laws”, the spouses of his children. His grandchildren were a source of great pride, he developed unique relationships with each that were as unique as the children themselves. To his family Peter was a guiding hand as his children were allowed to find their own paths, sometimes with a nudge, sometimes with a shove, but always with love. Husband, Father, Counselor, Champion, Disciple of Faith, Teacher, Mentor, & Friend. He will be missed.

I'm so sorry to hear of Pete's passing. I knew him and Carol from the Winter Park (FL) Church of the Brethren before he became a pastor. Then I would see him at the denomination's Annual Conference, and always enjoyed catching up. He was a caring friend and devoted follower of Jesus. My condolences to the family who lost a wonderful husband and father, and to all his many friends.

We are so sorry to learn of Peter's passing. We send our deepest sympathy to all the family. Peter pastored us at Red Hill Church of the Brethren many years ago.

Pete and Carol were great friends for many years. While we were at Bethany Seminary together they invited us to their home each year for Thanksgiving when we couldn't be home with our family. Their friendship continued through their time in Shenandoah District and until now. We will miss Pete, with his wit and wisdom and his heart for ministry to all of God's people. Prayers and blessings to Carol and family.

Prayers and all the best to you, dear spouse and family of Pete Leddy. We've lost an original. I felt like Pete always had something deeper yet than most of us thought of saying.

With great admiration and respect--and love,
Ron Wyrick (Semi-retired pastor, West Marva, Shenandoah)

    Dear Carol and Family,
I'm so sorry to read of Pete's passing. He was a giant! He was the best DE WestMarva ever had and his mouth and mine were too often expressing similar thoughts and ideas. I spent many hours in his office in Oakland talking stuff about ministry possibilities and the Church and life in general. I can't tell you what memories I have that are so very sweet! It was from his mouth that I first heard these phrases, "why aren't you ordained" and "bapti-costal". He often wished the COB had "bishops" instead of DE's so he could crack some heads together. (His words, not mine.) Then when we came back to Shenandoah and he was at Elk Run he honored me more than you know when he asked me to install him to his pastoral office there. I'd never done it before and never since, to be honest, but it was the highest honor he could have afforded me. In many ways, Pete Leddy was my mentor. I dearly loved him! These memories are sweet. May God bring you much comfort in knowing he impressed so many.

Pete always told it "straight-to the Churches he served, to his fruends, to his family. It was fun watchung Pete's ministry journey, sometimes up close like at Winter Park and "Dutchtown," sometumes frim further away through chats at conference. Always had a ton of respect for who Pete was, as a person, a father, a pastor. All my love to you all!

To the family of Pete Leddy, Please know that all of you are in our thoughts and prayers. Peter was influential in our lives when we lived in Morgantown, WV. He was supportive of us, even when he thought some of our decisions were risky! Once a call was issued and we decided to move to Newton, KS, he gave us his Blessing. He was there for us when we needed him. He was a good District Executive for West Marva District of the Church of the Brethren. I know he probably sacrificed family time to carry out his Ministry, but he had strong Pastoral gifts which he shared with both Congregations and Districts. I counted him among my friends.
Please know that all of you are remembered in this time of memories! We hope your good memories will continue to give you comfort! Sincerely, Leah and Bryan Harness
