Obituary

Phyllis K. (Pierce) Mathews of The Villages, Florida passed away and went to be with her Lord and Savior, October 28, 2022. She was 80 years old.

Born at home, in New Kensington, PA., she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Helen (Aftanas) Pierce. She was a Christian and of the Presbyterian faith. A strong faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, along with family were the two things most important to her in life.

She was a 1960 graduate of New Kensington High School. She married Douglas Mathews in 1964 and moved to CA. Soon after, returning to Pa., she moved to Harrisville, Pa. with her husband and family. She was a self-employed full-service Notary Public for more than 30 years and co-owner, with her husband, of Harrisville Memorials for 18 years. She fully retired in 2004 and moved to Florida with her husband. She greatly enjoyed golfing with the girls and playing card games, especially Mah Jongg.

She is survived, and will always be loved and remembered, by her husband Doug and two children, her daughter Deneen, Florida and her son Dean and wife Kathy, Virginia as well as three grandchildren, Nick and wife Savannah, Arkansas and Jessica and Joshua, Virginia. She is survived by one sister, Margaret and one brother, Harry, both of Pa., along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by four sisters – Elizabeth, Helen, Estella Mae and Shirley and one brother – Herbert Jr.

There will be no visitation. Final resting place will be in Harrisville “Prairie” Cemetery, Harrisville, Pa.

I will always remember Phyl as being warm, funny, quick witted, strong, and willing to speak her mind. She had an incredibly beautiful smile that lit up a room. I know her love with Doug was very special and he will miss her every day until they are together again in paradise. My prayers go out to all of her family and friends. Much love your way!

Sweet Phyllis will be missed so much. So glad I had the privilege and pleasure of knowing her. Will always remember in golf what she taught us girls (if miss a shot move off the green, turn in circles and then go back and try again). Loved your smile and will always remember the cucumber in the water.

Doug, we are so sorry for your loss. I have a special place in my heart for Phyllis, as she was so much fun and always so supportive of me as a new golfer. When I knew I was playing with Phyllis I knew I would have a great time. She has been so missed from our Tuesday golf group and will surely be missed every moment of every day. She was a great lady. The heaven above will be so much better when we get there with Phyllis there for us all. Crystal &DJ Cruise
