Obituary
On July 5th, Raymond C. Abels passed away peacefully, rejoining his father and mother in eternal peace. He was born on January 6, 1950, in Baltimore, MD to parents, Orem and Ann Abels.
Raymond, known affectionately as Ray, led a remarkable life defined by courage, service, and love. A Vietnam Veteran and survivor of Agent Orange, Ray served his community as a Baltimore City Firefighter and later as a dedicated Physical Therapist. His commitment to helping others extended far beyond his professional life; Ray volunteered with Hospice, homeless shelters, and was an active member of the Florida Sunrise Emmaus community.
Ray had a zest for life that was infectious. He cherished his travels, found solace in books, and enjoyed the camaraderie of bowling, camping, and playing board and card games. His resilience was legendary, overcoming challenges with a spirit that seemed invincible.
Ray also had a passion for cooking, which brought joy to countless friends and family members over the years. His legacy as a great cook will live on in the hearts and memories of all who had the pleasure of savoring his delicious meals.
To his family, Ray was more than a brother, uncle, and son; he was a pillar of strength and unconditional love. His deep bond with his wife Kate was a testament to enduring love and partnership, cherished by all who knew them.
Raymond is survived by his loving wife Kate Abels, sister JoAnn Opitz and her husband Rick, niece Lindsay Longo and her husband Jimmy, brother Orem Abels and his wife Heidi, his mother-in-law Sylvia Saulnier, his sisters-in-law Tricia Littlejohn and Rebecca Saulnier, nieces Tess and Alicia, and many other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
Raymond C. Abels lived a life rich in adventure, compassion, and love. His legacy of service and resilience will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
A celebration of Raymond’s life will be held on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at 1:30pm at First United Methodist of Ormond, 336 S. Halifax Dr., Ormond Beach, Fl 32176.
