Raymond H. Guthrie
March 15, 1942-November 14, 2014
Raymond H. Guthrie, born to the late Charles & Lillian Guthrie, was known by most who loved him as Gus or to his beloved Grandchildren as Grandpa Gus. He was born in Coshocton, OH, graduated from Roscoe High School, served proudly in the United States Army during the Vietnam War where he
was stationed in Germany. After his service he and his wife, Carol (Crouso) Guthrie, moved back to the States and their only child, William Charles Guthrie (Bill) was born. Gus worked for many years with JC Penney Company moving up and managing many different stores and departments. He was a born sales man. In 1982, he moved his family to New Smyrna Beach were they had vacationed for many years and come to know as a second home. Gus was a sales manager for Citizen Watch Company until his accident in 1984. Even after his accident that left him wheel chair bound he continued to help others. He was very involved in the Quarterback Club at New Smyrna Beach High School and mentored many young athletes. In recent years Gus was active in the Corvette Club and his cars placed multiple times at many local car shows. These big toys were his prize possessions. He also continued to hunt at least once a year and always looked forward to this experience. Gus was known to be the life of the party, but also a very generous, kind man who had a passion for helping young people and inspiring others. He was never afraid to share the lessons he had learned over this lifetime with others in hopes to better their lives. He will live on through his stories and the life lessons he shared. Due to his situation it was difficult for him to travel, but no matter what it took, he attended as many of his grandchildren's games, activities and ceremonies as possible. They were his pride and joy and he would light up when they were around.
Gus is survived by his son, Bill Guthrie, his daughter-in-law, Maria Guthrie, his three grandchildren, Colin, Kaitlyn & Kelsey, his brother, Harold Guthrie, his brother John Guthrie, many nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and fellow veterans that were very dear to him. He is also survived by many caregivers who without their love and devotion would not have led such a full life. He was grateful always for the love and support of Muriel Shirk, Belinda Peterson, Shari Eldridge, and many others over the years. Gus was
proceeded in death by his parents Charles & Lillian Guthrie; four of his brothers, Edward, Charles, Owen, and Gordon Guthrie; and by his sister Ruth Larr. Gus never lost his love of life or let his limitations stop him. He lived his own way and called his own shots until he passed away peacefully at home as he would have wanted.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 13,2014 at 2 to 3:30PM at Riverside Grille in New Smyrna Beach FL.
