Richard was born in Washington, D.C. on July 10 1926. He grew up in the area. During WWII He served briefly in the Army from February 1945 until October 1946. After the war he attended art school before going to work for the Washington Post in the early 1950's where he was employed until his retirement in 2008. His primary interest, however was the opera. He had an extensive collection of opera records which he loved to listen to whenever he could. He visited the Metropolitan Opera in New York on many occasions. Usually he would attend an opera performance twice, once to sit in the ground floor section to "see" the performance and then again to sit in the first balcony to "hear" the same opera. He remained in the DC area most of his adult life. He never married. In 2011 Richard was no longer able to care for himself. He moved to the Gardens at Depugh Nursing Center in Winter Park, Florida to be near his brother Joe. He was well taken care of there. His closest relatives are his brother, Joe former mayor of Winter Park, and Joe's two daughters, Jaime Duffy of Scottsdale Arizona and Elisa Terranova of Fulsom California.
