Obituary

Robert Andrew McKelvie (Rob or Bob McKelvie) of Fort Myers, Florida passed away on March 3, 2018 at the age of 74 following a long illness. Originally from the Philadelphia area, Rob graduated from Bishop Egan High School in Levittown, Pennsylvania. He attended Villanova University on a Navy scholarship, earning a B.S in Social Studies
with a major in political science. Upon graduation in 1965, Rob served five years as a Naval Officer which included four years on Destroyers out of Newport, Rhode Island, and a year in Vietnam as an advisor to the Vietnamese Navy where he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with combat V, as well as decorations from the Vietnamese Navy for his service.  After Vietnam, Rob spent four years in graduate business studies at Temple University in Philadelphia with the help of the GI Bill. He worked at Philadelphia area advertising agencies for 15 years, in research and marketing services, before starting his own marketing research company.

Rob relocated to Fort Myers in 1997, where he worked in sales for the world’s leading provider of IT research and services, Gartner, Inc., from 1998 until retiring at the end of 2006.

In retirement Rob became a snow bird, living half the time in Grantown-on-Spey, Scotland with his Scottish wife, Sandra, close to her family. When in Fort Myers, Rob was active with the Lee County Democratic Party, contributing mainly through his writing and advocacy for social justice, good government, and sound economic policies.
Rob was preceded in death by his mother, Agnes Hagan McKelvie, and his father, Robert Millar McKelvie.
A loving husband, father, and brother, Rob is survived by his loving wife Sandra McKelvie, loving daughters Danielle McKelvie and Leah McKelvie, and his loving sister, Sr. Roberta Agnes McKelvie, OSF.

Rob and I connected only briefly in 2015 after working together in 1970 while on Navy Staff Duty in Saigon. As I recall, his role took him to the Saigon Shipyard and mine took me to most US Navy Bases being turned over to the Vietnamese Navy. So sorry for his family. It is ironic that he died on my birthday as I had just reached out to him earlier today for some support when I did not know he had passed.

For several years, Bob & I were colleagues at an advertising agency in Philadelphia, where he was known and admired most for his in-depth knowledge & intelligence, his warmth, and his sincerity. There wasn't a phony bone in Bob's body; his integrity was the crown jewel of his character. In our respective retirements we resumed our relationship, this rime via social media & email and we quickly came to know & love each other more than ever. Like all of you among his family & friends who loved him, I will miss Bob very much and hope to one day resume our relationship! Rest in peace, Bob.

My deepest condolences to Rob’s family.

Despite the fact that Rob and I are from the same city and went to the same university, I only knew Rob through Facebook. I was attracted to Rob’s views on life and his love of mankind. I tear thinks down the old but Rob built people up. He helped raise the consciousness of all who knew him.

    Fly, Rob, fly!

My sincerest condolences to Rob’s family. It was very sad to hear that Rob left us to soar to higher planes.

Despite the fact that Rob and I are from Philadelphia and went to the same University, I only knew Rob through Facebook. It seems we had a common connection, that of advancing human beings to a more loving plane. I tear down, Rob built up. May his love of mankind affect the lives of many.

    Fly, Rob, Fly!

I worked with Rob at Gartner for several years, and was glad to be able to stay in touch with him through Facebook after his retirement. A wonderful man who always had an interesting story to share. One of the best people I’ve ever known. The world was lucky to have him, and he certainly made it a better place.
